Of course, TV audiences don't want to actually watch real ugly people. There is a subconscious reaction to appearance that will either keep people looking or turn them away. If the actors where truly ugly, say, Helen Thomas ugly, they wouldn't watch.
I agree. Much like the girl from the Harry Potter books was supposed to be homley, but was played by a pretty girl in the movies.
I always thought that was the heart of the gag. The Ugly Bettys were supposed to be seen as actually beauties—they just needed a makeover and a wardrobe change.
I get a kick that the Chinese version, Wu Di, claims to have gained twenty pound for the role and gotten a tan. I sure as hell can’t see the extra twenty and the tan is not so noticeable.
It seems the Chinese viewing public is the only one not to go along with the gag.
Interesting that in China having a tan is still declasse.
Of course, before Coco Chanel made it fashionable in the 1920’s, having a tan universally meant that you were a peasant fieldworker and ladies worldwide carried parasols.
Well shee-it. Us greasy, dumpy chulos aren’t going to watch las telenovelas to see people who look just like ourselves?
Those Bollywood actors are whiter than us gringos.

I live in a university town w/a fair number of Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans. I see many of the Asian women, of all ages, with sun hats; no one else seems to wear them. Even the little old white ladies seem to get by w/a pair of sunglasses. I think some of the old customs die hard.
