A border patrol officer and his mother, both from Metairie, were indicted today on federal charges of conspiracy and transporting and harboring undocumented foreigners.
Customs and border agent Merlin Mireles, 39, and Gloria Mireles, 66, allegedly harbored a Mexican woman who was in the United States illegally and her two children from June 2004 to February 2005.
Merlin Mireles, who was assigned to the Port of Progreso in Texas, drove the woman and children from Texas to Metairie, according to the indictment. Mireles and his mother provided housing for them in exchange for housekeeping work by the woman.
An announcement from the U.S. attorney's office in New Orleans said Gloria Mireles helped the woman find a part-time job with a Metairie plumbing company and helped enroll her children in Jefferson Parish public schools. Officials did not identify the Mexican family, the plumbing company or specific schools.
The Mireleses each face up to 10 years in prison on the conspiracy count, 5 years on the harboring count and 5 years on the transporting count, as well as a $250,000 fine, if convicted.

So this guy used his position as a border agent to get a woman with two kids to be his live-in maid? And enrolled the kids in the Metairie Public Schools?
Why didn’t he just stick up American citizens directly? At least he wouldn’t be violating his oath of office that way!
>>Border agent, mother in Metairie charged with harboring foreigners<<
Terrible headline. Harboring “foreigners” isn’t the issue. Foreign visitors with visas and legal immigrants are welcome and an important part of our history.
Its harboring illegal aliens that is the issue. And that is what they were doing but not how the headline reads.
I think the fact he was a border agent might just have been considered an aggravating circumstance.
If jail was good enough for Ramos and Campion (who were doing their duty as Border guards), then this jerk should certainly serve a good long sentence. He is a bad apple.
Agreed. Egregious headline malpractice.
