Short of gender specific concentration camps for kids between the age of 13 and 18, we'll never end teen sex. I do think we could help to reduce it considerably with a few simple things like family values (not always sucessfull as the Palin case shows) End the media sexualizing of children is another issue.

Or we could take the liberal route. LOL

Ditto that...abstinence is unrealistic but what is realistic is self control which no longer exists. But then again, this is just another example how we are heading towards the fate of Ancient Rome.

Right...

Funny, the “don’t have sex” message worked pretty well on me when I was a teenager. I’m not even ten years older than Bristol but she is right that having a baby is a lot easier when you’re not 17.

The whole point of parenting is to try not to let your kid make too big a mistake, right? I’m not going to let my baby eat rat poison just because she needs the freedom to make her own mistakes.

Puberty drives the urge. It is as natural as breathing, eating and sleeping. It is when the natural body feels the need. Can’t change that.

You have to breathe, eat and sleep in order to stay alive. But you have to have sex in order to stay alive? Bad and faulty analogy, IMO.

Abstinence works when BOTH parties wish to be abstinent. It is difficult when one or both parties have raging hormones and lots of time on their hands.

Despite the hype, teen mothers do not always produce children who become teen parents. I was born when my mother was 16 and don’t have any children. None of my 4 sisters had a child before 22 years old either.

But you have to have sex in order to stay alive?

I am sure that some 16 year old boys think that you do!!!

Remember the most you can do is instill you values in them when they are young, and pray to God for the rest.

Exactly!!! I raised my son with the knowledge that pre marital sex would cause nothing but heartache, and problems.

You are spot on. I lost mine on my 16th birthday. I am 38 years old happily married with two great kids. I only had a couple of other relationships before I met my wife. I was no way a major player but I did not abstain.

I still regret it. It saddens me sometimes. Sex before marriage is empty and causes nothing but trouble. My kids will be taught that. Whether they heed is out of a parents control.

Don’t you know, she would have ‘sploded’ if she didn’t do it.

You can raise your children right, but their own stupidity will still get in the way.

I suspect this gal is filled with Mom questions and probably gets to face 24/7 the consequences of her choices. Life may make her or break her, I pray for her to gain the strength to not let her choices break her.

Oh on another note I am not overly religious but I do have a ton of morals. If that makes sense.

Same here. It takes some self-control. Good grief, my generation is so weak...

So why did abstinence work in the 50s & 60s? My high school in the 70s had 4000 students. I heard of ONE who became pregnant. I’m sure there were more, but no way it hit 2%.

The other night I was talking about how my children and I had talked about them courting rather than dating. A 20 year old said, “I was a teen. It’s not going to work. They might do that three or four times, then will start sneaking out.” Gasp! To think I was a teenager when this boy was born and I might know what my children’s personalities are like. The conversation had actually developed over why my 14 year old son isn’t girl crazy and has other interests that he is occupied with. I originally got the idea from a good friend of mine who’s daughters have decided to do the same thing. The hardest part for my son has been his friends bugging him about not having a girlfriend when he says, “I don’t want one.”

Years ago I spoke to a lad in England. From the American movies he thought we were awake 24 hours a day.

“her mom preaches is “not realistic at all.””

That is, for her and her level of will power and self control.

Since it is a consensual act, and 2 parties must agree to participate, it is very realistic for those who can't get someone to agree.

My kids will be taught that. Whether they heed is out of a parents control.

The most important thing you can do is tell your kids your true feelings on the subject, but also to remember that "in the heat of the moment" they probably won't be thinking about how you told them that is is "empty and causes nothing but trouble".

I have been married to my high school sweetheart for 21 years. He is still my best friend, but I am not naive enough to believe that everyone that gets married at age 19 will be that lucky. I couldn't, with a straight face, tell my son that not having premarital sex was an absolute (because we know that it certainly is not), but I can tell him in all honesty that when you wait for the right person, at the right time there is nothing as spectacular in the world.

Exactly. It’s about having standards.

Bristol’s statement seems like the usual after-the-fact justification for a teenager that steps in it. IOW’s “the standard is too high and it is therefore unreasonable to expect me to meet it”. She’ll eventually realize the error, she is now raising a kid of her own.

Unfortunately she just handed the liberals a bumber sticker punchline: “Stopping teen sex? Ain’t gonna happen — Bristol Palin”

99.8 % of virgins that marry do not get divorced..

97.2% of Reclaimed virgins that don’t have sex 9 months prior to Marriage don’t get divorced..

Bishop Sheen earlier layed out the whole reasoning in 1955!
