I’m very blunt with the preteen/teen girls in my family. I tell them straight out that all boys want is sex, and they will say or do anything to have sex with you. I also have them (and the preteen/teen boys) watch as I change the diapers on my baby. I tell them... if you want to spend your teenage years doing this instead of going to college, then have sex.

The media glamorizes this stuff and forces this behavior on young people...who are not psychologically prepared to deal with anything so intense and emotional. The whole thing is inescapable and parents have a hard time de programming that stuff.

but I can tell him in all honesty that when you wait for the right person, at the right time there is nothing as spectacular in the world.

Thanks for rubbing it in. LOL!!

I believe that the reason a couple needs to wait is to create a bond. Something I won't have. However, I do have a hell of a marriage but of course it can always be better. Very happy.

NBC’s Today Show was so hypocritical covering this, I was stunned...I know I shouldn’t have been..but...

As for those that want to diminish Sarah Palin via her daughter, her newborn son, etc etc etc...I’ll just note the following.

I’d be very very happy with the Palin family as my neighbors.

wouldn’t you?

I agree with you. There seem to be a lot of freepers who think the current situation of "hooking up" and "friends with benefits" has always existed. Nope. I graduated HS in 1978 and most people I knew lost their virginity in college.

The whole point of morals (and civilization) is to get humans to behave in unnatural ways. If some guy steps on my toe while waiting in line, my natural response is to pick up a rock and bash his skull. But I don't. I have self control. I have a sense of right and wrong. So, if a 16-year-old boy sees a cute girl, does he want to get her into bed? Yes. Does he need to act on that? No. Self-control is possible, people! This is what moral teachings are all about.

The long history of humanity is the story of human failings and coming up short in the morals department. But that doesn't mean that we give up and say "Go for it!" We're supposed to try to be better than that.

So why did abstinence work in the 50s & 60s? My high school in the 70s had 4000 students. I heard of ONE who became pregnant. I’m sure there were more, but no way it hit 2%.

You don't really think that this means the other 3999 students didn't have sex... Oh please. It means that a whole lot used contraceptives, didn't become pregnant or maybe even had an abortion (hopefully not). It is nonsense to base the number of sexual contact on the number of pregnancies (that were known).

Society definitely has encouraged an explosion in teen sex. Even as a teen in the 80s I don’t recall it being anywhere near this bad.

I was in a small school of under 400 students and only know of two teen mothers in my class but I suspect that I was aware of them because they were among my circle of friends. I have little doubt that there were more that I never noticed.

In earlier decades most teen mothers would suddenly “go to a private school” for a year.

Empty? How is two teenagers in a car, listening to “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” after a junior dance, empty?

Do as I say, not as I do. :)

When asked how the character Don Corleone was based on his mother, Mario Puzo said that he called his mom to tell her he got a $500,000 book advance for “the Godfather II”, the largest book advance in history at that time, later he got a call from his sister congratulating him on his 50,000 advance.

He called his mom and said “Mom, why are you telling the family I got 50,000, it was 500,000!” and she said “Baby, you GOT to play things a little closer to your vest.”

I don't get it. I started having sex at around 10 years old and nobody got pregnant.

False gods and idolatry at its extreme. Until Americans understand that, we are lost. Turn it off.

Some may find my thinking extreme. But if we ask ourselves:
Where do we get our fashions?
How often do we realign our schedules to watch something?
How many Americans can tell you all the current candidates on AI and who J Bauer is up against this week, yet know nothing of Elijah?

And then ask:
How much time do we give the Almighty, other than when he is “on” on Sunday morning?
Do we model ourselves after Biblical Characters or our favorite “star”?
Do we really know Jesus, or take of few selective passages and “package” Him into another mere collectivist teacher?

Wake up America. This is why we are headed off a cliff. Rant off.

JenB, I agree: “expecting” the lowest common denominator isn’t a way to improvement. My short rant to the naysayers:

Abstinence is entirely possible, but it’s made far, far more difficult when the teen is put into challenging situations. By delaying single dating until the early 20s, when individuals are more ready for commitment and marriage, or by rejecting the serial monogamy of dating altogether and working on a courtship model of social relation, teens avoid the “alone after dark” and “alone in the house” situations that tend to cause the trouble.

It’s very, very hard to get overwhelmed by hormones and “give in” when you’re sitting there playing a board game with your date and your parents.

I didn’t date in high school. I didn’t have sex, either. I did have a social life—both boy and girl friends were at our house a lot, doing all sorts of fun social things; we went to dances, to the lake, on road trips. The trick to it: we had adequate adult company, and no peer pressure to “hook up.”

It is ENTIRELY reasonable to expect teenage people to exercise self control.

Why is Bristol granting interviews on personal matters is the first place!

This dumb, headstrong young woman is going to diminish her mother with her attention-seeking and big mouth, wait and see. As a matter of fact, she already has, hasn't she.

What's next, a new "Mommie Dearest" book?

Stopping teen drug use is unrealistic too. Schools should teach kids how to safely shoot up.
