The Great Depression has Arrived- Collapsing American Dreams

Feb 19, 2009 - 12:52 AM

By: David_Vaughn

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleIt almost seems amusing that we are still discussing the “coming” depression because of the fact that it is already arrived and settling in. Really, what this entire new “era” is all about is watching our dreams deteriorate right before our eyes.

Want to hear what the real world is like today? Country star John Rich dramatizes this well in his new song, “They're Shutting Detroit Down.”

John Rich – “They're out there losing millions and it's up to me and you to come running to the rescue. Well pardon me if I don't shed a tear/they're selling make believe and we don't buy that here/cause in the real world they're shutting Detroit down, while the boss man takes his bonus pay and jets on out of town/DC's paying out the bankers as the farmers auction ground/while they're living it up on Wall Street in that New York City town, here in the real world they're shutting Detroit down.”

My favorite line is – “the boss man takes his bonus pay and jets on out of town.”

Wow! All these collapsed dreams! All the thousands of baby boomers with calloused hands looking at 50% reduced portfolios. What's a mother to do? Well, there's always Wal-Mart. And McDonalds needs someone to keep their tables clean. And let's not forgot The Waffle House. An old trusted stand in. Work as a short order cook for 60 hours a week. The opportunities are endless for those with empty bank accounts.

It seems that the majority of us are just not destined to move forward. How many thousands of thousands of heads of households are looking at the devastation of their 401K portfolio?

Uh, no one from the Baby Boomer middle class will ever be employed by Wal-Mart (well, maybe them) or McD's or Waffle House.

Unless of course you're referring to the Mexican baby boom of 1960 - 1990....

It’s sad, I remember my grandfather telling me of the First Great Depression. I guess I will have to compare my notes with his in this Second Great Depression. Never thought I would see the day.

Maybe our trading partners will extend some charity by feeding us and deciding not to attack us.

[...little irony, sarcasm and sardonic humor there. I really haven’t even come close to saying what I know regarding the economy, defense, public opinion as stated by the elites and US leadership in general. Americans are ejected from political parties, fired from their jobs and otherwise silenced for really speaking up.]

If you are short the market and long on silver and gold then life isn’t completely bad. Some day it will turn and folks will be buying low.

Every day Obama and his cronies say the word Crisis, and they wonder why nobody is spending.

Thanks for the change RATs.

I’m not yet convinced. So far I think the “crisis” is a little oversold. I think the libs *need* belief in the crisis to get their dream agenda.

That said, things may well suck for a while. But the thing the libs fear most is that the economy might start to recover too early. Before they get all their socialism in place.

But I’m choosing not to participate. For now. Except of course to stockpile ammo. :-)

Right now, we are in nothing even approaching The Great Depression. Conservatives need to start speaking positively and confidently reject this great Depression rhetoric. Once we are all convinced of this, the Socialists will have won.

Just as FDR used it to introduce a ton of Socialism into America, so too, will Obama. Hopeychangey has changed his tone and his rhetoric. His propagandists are working overtime to utilize this to their advantage. It will not matter how bad things are under his “reign” if he is seen as the one whose Socialist programs can save us. The problem is that none of his programs will work because they have all been tried before and they invariably fail. We must neutralize the Rats and disallow them talking us into misery and mayhem for their own nefarious purposes.

I’m actually getting pretty scared. If I don’t find a job before my severance runs out, I will be in serious trouble.

Actually... For anybody with some cash, now’s the time buy in on some serious stock bargains.

The stock market is sitting there with WalMart prices. I’m in buy mode. There are plenty of good companies out there, making money, good fundamentals and paying dividends, with P/E’s under 10. Ten!! Well... Ten years from now they’ll be looking sweet. IMHO.

Yes, that's true. Because Walmart won't hire white baby boomers who are out of work and desperate. MacDonald's won't hire them, either, because their Spanish language skills aren't strong enough. If they go to Waffle House and apply, they'll be laughed at because they're soooo middle class.

It's not funny. The sad fact is that even middle-class people who are humbly and honestly willing to take any sort of work, to labor for a maid service or clean bathrooms at the Holiday Inn, can't get those jobs.

I call it the "Not so Great Depression."

I call it that because I don't think people will learn from it.

The people is stupid now!

Better slaves that way.

You’re right. This is nothing like the Great Depression. Not even close. At least, not yet.

Reagan inherited an economy in far worse shape. Look how that worked out. :-).

The only problem now is whether the normal recovery can survive Obama and whatever the libs do to try and kill it.
