OAKLAND -- A man being robbed by two Oakland men in the parking lot of the Fruitvale BART station managed to grab a knife from one of the assailants and stabbed the other one to death, authorities said today.
The robbery victim was approached by the two 18-year-old men about 9:30 p.m. Thursday. One of the men showed a knife and the other said he had a gun, BART spokesman Linton Johnson said.
Their target, a 23-year-old man who lives out of state, was robbed of some items before wrestling away the knife from one of the men and stabbing the other robber, Johnson said. He said the stabbing "appears to be a self-defense move."
The two assailants ran, and the robbery victim, whose name was not released, called Oakland police.
A short time later, police got a 911 call from a nearby home about a stabbing, Johnson said.
That call came from a house around the corner from the station, where the family of Christopher Gonzalez lives. Gonzalez ran into the home, cried out for his parents and sister and collapsed in his father's arms, the father, Javier Gonzalez, said today.
The elder Gonzalez said he had tried to perform CPR but had been pulled away by police. Christopher Gonzalez died at the home.
The other alleged robber was also at the home and was arrested,

KTVU-2 had a different angle on the story this morning. They presented Gonzalez as a murder victim and featured his family being distraught over the attack.
A lawyer in Oakland told my friend, the only acceptable response to being the victim of a crime in Oakland is to curl up into the fetal position.
Something tells me this holdup victim is going to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
The two goblins went looking for trouble; they got some!
Smart move ... grab the knife from the knife-waver (who is now disarmed!) and use it on the guy claiming to have a gun (and is therefore the bigger threat).

If he's white and from the south, he'll be lucky to get trial.
My thoughts exactly.
This should happen much more often.
Me, too!
I have no sympathy for the kid, he should be old enough to realize that actions have consequences. Good job by the victim of the robbery, more people need to stand up for their Right to Life, Right to Liberty, and Right to Property.
I'm sure that will be great comfort to him, as he spends the next 20 years in jail.
Great tagline. Read that at my grandfathers’ funeral and is the reason for naming my 2nd son.
"I was lucky in the order...but I've always been lucky when it comes to killing folks
A fatal error in the victim selection process.
KTVU always does that kind of thing.
Ditto!
Hello Henry,
I have written you in the past to praise you for your well-written, timely and accurate reporting, but like the reason I chastised you before about not publishing the fact that a local murderer was an illegal immigrant (you said it had no relevance, I begged to differ), this most recent stabbing at the Fruitvale BART station is another reason your Liberal bias is again showing through.
This quote is so telling...
“Christopher Gonzalez worked at Oakland Raiders games and helped with his father’s roofing business, the elder Gonzalez said.”
Why the tidbit about the “good kid” innuendo (hard worker, 2 jobs)??? The kid could have been an alter boy, a missionary and Red Cross volunteer, it’s really irrelevant. He elected, along with a friend, to take a knife and gun to rob someone.
How about stopping with the Left Wing nonsense of blaming the victim and hurrying to see if the guy who got robbed is OK? The robber dies, so what? If you elect to commit felonious crimes, the cost could be your life. Just like Bill Richardson, it’s “pay to play” when committing crime.
If Chris Gonzalez was working, why did he and his buddy need to rob a commuter? I know the family is sad, but what if they robbed or killed the innocent man? I’m sure the Chronicle would have classified it as another random crime...it is amazing how far away from reality modern journalism is.
Your paper is dying, along with many other Left Wing rags (NYT, USA Today, Tribune, etc.) and you still cannot figure out why...
I would blame your Communist college journalism professors who instilled that activism posing as journalism is the best way to push an agenda.
Your writing skills are good, and you are timely...but your bias is astounding.
Sincerely,
Tom
KTVU’s morning anchor was arguing FOR TAX INCREASES today...
