A 16-year-old girl whose beating by a King County sheriff's deputy was captured on camera is now facing a felony harassment charge for allegedly threatening another teenager at Westfield Southcenter mall.
Malika Calhoun pleaded not guilty Wednesday morning to the harassment charge as well as a charge of criminal trespassing, a gross misdemeanor, in King County Juvenile Court.
According to charging papers, the alleged victim said she was standing in line at the mall's Cinnabon counter on Feb. 2 when she overheard two other girls say they were angry at her for some slight she had committed against a 17-year-old friend. Later that day, the 17-year-old and Calhoun approached the alleged victim at the mall, the papers state.
Calhoun reportedly became angry and said, "I will come back with a burner ... and shoot you in the face," according to charging papers. "Burner" is a slang term for a handgun, court documents said.
The alleged victim's mother was with her at the time. She separated the girls and called 911, court papers say. Tukwila police officers arrested Calhoun and the 17-year-old at the mall. The 17-year-old was not charged.
The two teenagers had been issued trespass warnings a day earlier in which they had agreed not to return to the mall for a year, investigators said. It's unclear from court documents why they were barred from returning to the mall.
In a separate incident in November, Calhoun was arrested for investigation of auto theft. While she was in a holding cell at SeaTac City Hall, prosecutors say Sheriff's Deputy Paul Schene, 31, beat her. Schene was charged with fourth-degree misdemeanor assault.
Surveillance video shows Calhoun, then 15, kick her tennis shoe....

Still doesn’t make the cop beating her okay. Throw em both in jail.
Sugar and spice and everything nice.
I don’t understand how anyone could strike such a sweet little thing. That JBT that brutalized the little sweetheart after she tried to save him the trouble of bending over to pick up her shoes should be punished. Maybe with a ‘burner.’ I just knew the cop was in the wrong, and it was totally unprovoked.
I say give the little beast 50 lashes in public.
She wasn’t beaten hard enough.
This is shocking! She seemed like such a nice, respectful young lady! ;-)
“I will come back with a burner ... and shoot you in the face,” Just another 15/16 yr old lippy teen.
Does this lass have what’s called an “attitude problem?”
Raising my two was tough enough, and they were good by todays standards.
One has nothing to do with the other except for the girl was part of both.
Yeah...she was a good girl, turning her life around. She didn’t wanna hurt nobody. They were just words, just speech.
I think there is a connection, but it isn’t to say that she SHOULD have gotten beaten by a Police Officer while in custody.
Just as those who never say anything objectionable are not the ones at the forefront of the battle over the first amendment.
Those of us who are respectful to Police Officers are not the ones at the forefront of the battle over Police brutality.
It is the TROUBLEMAKERS who need to be defended from Police brutality, infringement of their first Amendment rights, etc, etc.
This gal is obviously a troublemaker and probably a little sh*t as well. But that is exactly the sort that is going to draw the brute out of a Police officer liable to engage in brutality. We should thank her for showing the hidden face of this thug, fire him for being a bad Police Officer; and then prosecute this little sh*t for whatever crime they think they can get a conviction for.
Granted. The jailer and inmate had quite the verbal interaction prior to her physical assault on the jailer.
This particular jailer has had a couple of interactions (including a fatal shooting) with other inmates. Interesting stories.
Who didn’t see this coming?
When she allegedly stole her parents car, she was living away from home due to family troubles.
She didn't take HER parents' car, she took the car of the family who took her in, bringing THEIR young daughter along for the joyride.
At least that's what I got from the stories published at the time.
The cop was wrong, there is simply no reason to do what he did. He lost it for a very minor reason, in the scheme of things and in that environment, that is a very dangerous thing to happen. The cop was lucky he didn't lose it with a real dangerous perp
I was adamantly opposed to this King County deputy when this video was released...My blood was boiling after watching his assault on the girl...But now Ms Calhoun is showing her true colors and my position is rapidly changing...this little “smart ass” is a future resident of the WA State Dept. of Corrections, and I can somewhat empathize with Deputy Paul Schene now. She was such a little angel when she appeared on all the morning talk shows, but her little halo is very tarnished. Malika Calhoun had better grow up...AND QUICK!!
