“Everything happens too quickly,” Woods said. “You either play dead or you are dead.”

Woods is full of crap all through the article. Wasn’t it students and citizens with deer rifles that laid down all the suppressive fire so that somebody could get close enough to whack Whitman.

Any liberal with a room temperature IQ can claim to be an intellectual these days.

And do you suppose the Sniper back then would have cared if he broke ONE more LAW?

Of course not, he would have brought the rifle to the tower regardless of the law.

The only thing that changes is honest citizens now have no opportunity to defend themselves

Just before Texas made it legal to carry, there was a woman at a LUBY’s cafeteria in Waco, where a shooter started randomly shooting one day......She stated to the newspapers that she could have stopped him, but her gun was in her car, because it was not legal for her to carry.......

You are thinking of the Luby’s in Killeen, TX. I ate their regularly with my family in the months prior to the shooting; several people I knew from Church were shot.

Also, the woman you are thinking of is Dr. Suzanna Gratia Hupp.

I currently attend UT Austin for graduate school; there are a large number of graduate students with CHLs here that are hoping this law passes.

Thanks,

Yup, even Wikipedia mentions it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Whitman

“Once Whitman began facing return gunfire from the authorities and civilians who had brought out their personal firearms to assist police, he used the waterspouts on each side of the tower as gun ports, allowing him to continue shooting largely protected from the gunfire below but also greatly limiting his range of targets. Ramiro Martinez, an officer who confronted Whitman, later stated in his book that the civilian shooters should be credited, as they made it difficult for Whitman to take careful aim without being hit.”

Most of the civilian and police bullet strikes on the tower have never been repaired. If you go there today, you will still see the scars from where average men and women took up their own arms and suppressed a sniper long enough for three policemen and a *civilian* to get up to the tower and finish the job.

If the civilians (students and neighbors of the college) had not had access to firearms, Whitman could have killed *hundreds*. Here’s the complete list of what the psycho had brought with him to the tower:
