OK, gun gurus...Glock or Springfield XD-M? (vanity)
Free Republic | April 8, 2009 | Choose Ye This Day

I'm finally buying a handgun this week, after a long time wanting one, my wife finally relented.

I know I want a 9mm. (No, I don't want anything bigger than that.) It's mostly for target shooting, and to have around the house, not for concealed carry.

The two I'm interested in are the Glock and the Springfield Armory XD-M. I'm torn between the two.

Those that know handguns far better than I do...which would you choose, and why?

I have a Glock model 19 9MM and a Springfield XD .45 and hands down I like the XD more. In my part of the country the prices are close to the same.

My XD will hold 13 in the mag also and I have small hands and the grips fit my hand perfectly.

Is the CZ-75 almost a target pistol like a Beretta FS 92 or a SIG? You used to be able to get them pretty inexpensively after the wall came down but they are not so cheap now. good stuff.

If you had to live in a commie country (before the wall came down) - Czech Republic would have been probably better than today in most of California, eastern Michigan, NY or NJ. The Czech’s (even under communism) made good guns & beer plus the women are HOT. ;-)

I hate these Chevy vs. Ford threads.

Just buy plenty of ammo soon before it is all priced out of reach.

The other thing I liked about the XD-M in 9mm is that it holds 19 in a clip. The Glock holds 17.

That’s going to be one of my big problems. All the ammo is gone around here.

Put KB and Glock into Google.

But I wonder if Glocks are more durable in the long run...

Disturbed mother kills son, self at shooting range
Article from: NEWS.com.au

* Woman thinks she’s the anti-Christ; kills son
* Turns gun on herself at shooting range

A DERANGED mother has held a gun to her unsuspecting son’s head at a shooting range and pulled the trigger. The woman killed him before turning the gun on herself.

Marie Moore, 44, who thought she was the anti-Christ, took her 20-year-old son Mitchell to the Shoot Straight range in Casselberry, Florida, for what he thought was an afternoon’s firing practice, The Sun reports.

Moore apologised several times in a series of recordings and suicide notes left for her boyfriend and police and said repeatedly: “I had to send my son to heaven and myself to Hell.”

The Associated Press reports police as saying today they still had no motive for the murder-suicide that shocked fellow customers and employees at the Shoot Straight range in Casselberry, about 16km north of Orlando, on Sunday.

“We have no clue. I don’t even want to begin to speculate,” said Deputy Chief Bill McNeil of the Casselberry Police Department.

Springfield is newer technology.

The XD is the Croatian HS2000 which is ten years old and based on earlier Croatian models. The XDm is just a new configuration of the XD.

I would definitely shoot them both and also look at HKs and Sigs.

Unfortunately, all I can do is LOOK at the HK’s and SIG’s. They’re just not in the budget this year. Maybe in the future.

I LOVE my PX4! Its a great pistol. I have the .40. Beretta makes great guns ... you don’t stay in business for 500 years without making a fantastic product!

As to glock be aware that the full size is the 17 or 34. The Compact is the 19. I have nooooo problem with any of these including the compact. Now the sub compact Glock 26 ?9mm is to small for me .....won’t carry such as a primary means of self defense.

Here are the 9’s !

You like the feel of the XD-M so that might be your best bet. I understand the odd feeling shooting, racking the slide in the glock. you probably will get used to it but if the other feels good go with it.

Ammo - you will probably have to go online. Sportsman’s Guide is one place and others here have suggestions. make sure it is in stock when you order. SG usually lists if it is in stock. Others here can suggest more ammo sources online.

I wouldn’t call them target pistols. What’s most noteworthy about them is their ergonomics. They’re just very easy to shoot well (and very reliable). Their prices have definitely gone up, but not nearly as expensive as the SIGs are these days. The FS 92 is a very good gun, but for my taste it’s too big for the 9 x19 round. Again, it’s my personal taste, but I think semi-compacts like my P-01 or the Glock 19 are most appropriate for that diminuitive cartridge.

Sig 226 in 9mm. ;-)

Failing that I’d go with the Glock. Yeah, the Springfield is a bit “cooler” but the Glocks are proven dependable and I’ve heard sporadic stories of XDs being less so.

Thank you all for your responses and help.

I’m not 100% decided, but I’m leaning toward the XD because of the fit. I’m going to see if I can shoot one tomorrow.

Good post. Yes the FS92 now is too big for a 9x19 or 9 mm.
