and here you are judging me.....about judging the behavior of adultery......yikes! pot meet kettle....all the self-rightiousness involved here...indeed, FR is an education in life.

quit taking yourself so seriously, I don’t.

I'm really sorry I got into this with tioga. She makes her dogmatic statements to impugn another human being without any real knowledge of the situation and when she is called on it she hurls insults like a school girl. To the effect that you are silly to engage in a logical argument. What kind of a retort is " quit taking yourself so seriously"??

However, I blame myself. Some people here are only here to bait and switch. Shoulda known better the minute I read her first post. Memo to self; best to ignore her.

Later, calex59

bait and switch? look, his “reported” behavior is not Christian-like, yet he has made one of the greatest movies about Christ.......it is ironic that his personal life is in the toilet......and I am referring to the alleged behavior with a young bimbo...if we cannot have a rational discussion why are you posting on FR at all? It is all reported news. it is a fair assessment of the man given the news reports.

YOU keep posting to me, perhaps the news displeases you and you wish to blame me? I have no idea, but dang, you keep posting to me so I keep responding.

NOTE to YOU, please, do ignore me.

“Now, while I cannot crawl into Mel’s head, I do know that alcohol does not make one become a person with different world views. Rather, alcohol simply helps people lose their inhibitions.”

I suspect that you have no history of prolonged, heavy alcohol use. Alcohol use very well can make a person malicious in a way that is not natural to him.

“Thus, simply because Sober Mel does not publicly say that the Jews cause all the wars, does not mean that he does not think that. Instead, when he gets a few drinks in him, he spouts his anti-Semitic Vile.”

Sorry, but the evidence doesn’t prove your point. You could be right, but then again, you could be wrong.

“.12 is drunk, but its “You know Bob, I always thought your wife was hot.” drunk, not foaming at the mouth bat&$%* crazy ranting drunk.”

You can’t always tell. If my wife had .12, she’d be unconscious. OTOH, I was in on an early study of drinking and driving back in the early 70s, and all the young men actually drove better at .10.

There’s simply no way to tell how impaired he was at the time, even without considering inaccuracies in measurement or asking how many days he had been drunk.

For the record, I do know how a Christian man should behave......

I think most of us have a pretty good idea of the ideal. And if we're honest, I think we'd all say we fall short of that ideal. Daily. Maybe even hourly.

I am saying behavior like that does not indicate the man has become a Christian.....just because he made an excellent movie, it did not change his life.

No, I think you mean that he's not yet become a saint. IOW, his virtue is not yet heroic. "Christians" come in all shapes and flavors but all are a work in progress. All who strive to follow Christ can be called "Christian" even when they fall into sin, however seriously.

Remember the pain of St. Paul when he laments that he does "not the good which I intend but the evil which I do not intend" and he then goes on to make his famous statement; "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak". This applies to all of us. Some people most certainly do have life changing experiences and through the grace of God are able to leave behind their demons. Others struggle for years and repeatedly fall only to rise and struggle again. Everyone is different.

Who knows where Mel is on his journey? He may well have committed adultery, just as Mary Magdalen did. The real test of whether he is Christian is not the fall but the response to it. Is he truly remorseful for whatever sin he has committed and does he truly want to "go and sin no more" in the words of Jesus. These are things to which we are not privy.

I agree that giving scandal does serious damage to the Christian mission. Those who profess to follow Christ ought to live so as to be beyond the reproach of unbelievers and not cause them to turn away from the Gospel message, so in that respect I agree with you. However, as long as we draw breath, the struggle against sin will go on.

Amen to that. On my way to mass now, I will remember to pray for fallen Christians, including myself.

I drank copious amounts of alcohol in my day and may have done and said some stupid things. However, under no circumstances under the influence of alcohol would I say that the "The Jews are responsible for all the world's wars."

So, I stand by the fact that Mel is a criminal and by the evidence of Mel's public statement that indicate that he is in fact an anti-Semite.

“And those together make Mel a Criminal and an anti-Semitic pig.”

Well, I guess I can’t persuade you to consider any alternative to that hard-line position.

Actually, it was Gibson who took a hard-line position when he publicly stated that the Jews cause all the wars.

Can you really not see the difference between a “public statement” and drunken rambling during a DUI arrest?

Really? Come on.

As I understand it, once a person is placed under arrest, the arresting officer Mirandizes the suspect. And during the process the officer will read to the suspect:

"Anything You Say can and Will be used against you in a Court of Law...."

Now, since Mel's knew his statement of “F*****g Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” would be entered into a Police Report and into Court, his vile statement was indeed a Public Statement.

Oh, now that’s just obdurate.

It is not the case that everything an arrestee says appears in either the police report or a court report. Just not true.

The Miranda Warning appears to be very clear"

You have the right to remain silent and refuse to answer questions. Do you understand?

Anything you do say may be used against you in a court of law. Do you understand?

And from the best I can tell, Mel's statement was written into a police report and thus entered into the Public Record.

So, entering a statement into the Public Record is in fact a Public Statement.

Have you no shame?

Is there no length to which you will not stretch to avoid giving this man a fair shake?

No fair-minded person on the face of planet earth would call that “making a public statement.”

You see, when a person says, “F*****g Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” I do not first check their conservative credentials to see if they deserve forgiveness.

Instead, I identify them as an anti-Semite and it does not matter if it was said by Mel Gibson or Tim Robbins.

I cannot help feeling a tiny little sinful quirk that says, “MEL IS SINGLE AGAIN!!!!!”

Hey yeah, maybe I'll look for him at the Synagogue Singles Dance. :)

“I do not first check their conservative credentials to see if they deserve forgiveness.”

Nor, apparently, do you take circumstances, a person’s mental state, or anything else into account, as a fair-minded person would.

No, as a conservative, when I see the a person accused of a crime claims "insanity" for their actions, I do not accept that as an excuse.

“No, as a conservative, when I see the a person accused of a crime claims “insanity” for their actions, I do not accept that as an excuse.”

That’s not conservative.

You intentionally exclude facts and valid considerations, then make up your mind on the basis of whatever is left.

Whatever conservatism may be, it is honest. It is grounded in the willingness, the courage, to face *all* the facts.
