The 17-year old girl from Shafter had been reported missing, so the deputy was going to take her home. But, he was attacked by her boyfriend,19-year old Manuel Sanchez.
According to the report, Sanchez, who's an active marine stationed in San Diego, managed to wrestle away the deputy's gun, but no shots were fired.

Stupid. This kid just ruined his entire life of a 17 year-old girl, who probably won’t even remember his name in ten years. Sad.
Can’t disagree. At 17, even if she is reported as “missing,” if the officer determines she is a runaway he has the option to return her to her parents. The Marine should have told her he would call her later. His decision was a very bad one.
It is best that we find out what kind of guy he is this early, some barriers can only be crossed by some one that is deeply troubled and I think that attacking a cop and wrestling their gun from them over a normal stop is one of those barriers, it is good to get him out of the Marines and give him a record.
I wonder if this Marine was getting free citizenship if he enlisted. Good to boot him out is right.
Scenario:
You are a parent who reported a 17 year old daughter as missing. A Deputy Sheriff locates her in a parked car with an adult male. What do you, as the parent who reported her as missing, expect the Deputy to do?
I'm not 100% on the law, but at 17 years old, I think she is an adult and not under her parents control.
Unless the minor has been declared as being emancipated by the Court, at 17 years a minor is still under the legal control of the parents in California. So, knowing that, what is your answer to the scenario.
If the law gives her parents the right to have her returned home, then she should have returned and her boyfriend had no say in the matter. I'm sure every state is different, but I think the age in NC is 16. Growing up, I remember a few kids who left home at 16 or 17 and their folks had no legal control over them.
That's correct. It doesn't matter what she said to the Deputy, his responsibility at that point was to return her to her parents.
