One of the great voices in sports broadcasting history... right up there with John Facenda (”The voice of God”).
I believe in 1980 he wasn’t allowed to do World Series coverage because they had network announcers only, but he got to call last year’s on the Phillies Radio Network
He was a very heavy drinker. Alcohol related?
Albie, Harry was very endearing to Phillies fans, including myself. He was a great voice of the Phillies. I don’t know the circumstances surrounding Harry’s death, and I pray for him and his family. I did occasion to see Harry in person (the only time) in a Philly hotel back in 1993. He was at the bar with a friend of mine, and Harry had passed beyond the sobriety threshold. Again, it’s only one time.
Looks like Harry won’t be coming down for breakfast this morning.....
Yep, a real sad day...Harry’s OUTTA HEEEEEEEre!
Good rest our friend!
Looks like it was probably a heart attack. He was in the booth preparing for the broadcast and keeled over unconscious.
Reunited.
I grew up in Philly, and moved to California in the early 1970’s. Of course I was a fanatical Phillies fan as a kid, but this was before Harry's time. The men who broadcasted the Phillies games of my youth were Byrum Saam, Bill Campbell, and Richie Ashburn.
There was a great interview with Harry last year during one of the playoff games. He was in the Fox TV booth for an inning or so and had some nice stories to share. You could just sense his deep love for the team and for the game.
Crying right now. Feels like a part of my childhood has just died.
Harry Kalas took over as the voice of NFL films after John Facenda (another Philadelphia broadcasting legend) passed away.
Nicest guy you would ever want to meet. He was very patient with all the goofballs (like me) asking him to say "Outta Here" every time we got up to go to the men's room.
RIP Mr. Kalas!
