Does Mel Gibson's wife deserve half his fortune? ($500 Million)
The Australian Telegraph ^ | April 16, 2009 12:01am

THREE cheers for feminism. With a desperate lack of anything worthwhile to aim their gunsights at, they turn on self-made billionaire Mel Gibson to support his estranged wife Robyn's demands for half his $US1 billion fortune.

The problem with absurd demands like this, underwritten by feminist approval, is that the girls always want it both ways.

For many years Robyn was prepared to remain at home as a loving wife. Retired as a dental nurse, supported by her husband.

Now, after the marriage has soured, Gibson has to pay for the life she apparently "gave up" to run their home, slave over a stove, and clean and raise their kids so he could make their millions.

I'm confused. Does that mean the traditional homemaking duties are not acts of love but merely bargaining chips in case of an iceberg down the line?

Over 28 years her claim for $500,000,000 works out at $4879 a day. Or $34,153 a week.

To argue that they are living in California, entitling her to half the fortune under California law, is once again more evidence of wanting it both ways.

It penalises Gibson for once having faith in his marriage and believing it would last.

Imagine the outcry if he had insisted on a pre-nup, to be applied retroactively, when they moved to California.

For years Gibson has taken the bullets that are a by-product of his fortune - privacy invasions, critical attacks, slander.

It entitles Gibson to keep the greater share of his wealth, a fortune amassed through his own creative genius.

Only a handful of people in the world have the talent to do what he does.

The argument that without Robyn's support he would never have succeeded is just desperate. The truer argument is that talent finds a way.

I have to say I agree with you and I am a guy. The wife cheated on me and she is going bye-bye. But I still feel she deserves half. She was tireless raising our two boys and tried her best to defeat her problems. I am friends now with her and we still live under the same roof, slowly undwinding things and planning. Kids stay sane, she is growing up a bit and I am soon to have a better quality of life. Hard path and lots of pain for me but I have found it worth it for the fam.

“That said, I’d like to see no-fault divorce done away with. If the wife cheats, they divorce and she gets nothing (or he gets half her stuff if she makes more). If the husband cheats, she gets at least half his stuff and the house.”

That would be nice but the wife denied cheating on me even when someone close to her told me directly. She still won’t admit it fully fearing that I will just leave her high and dry. Women and men would be unlikely to admit it and the courts are not likely to call witnesses except in high profile cases like this one.

If your cause of action is adultery, you must name a co-respondent, who will be compelled by the court to appear. Apparently you have a name.

Sorry dude, that is not nor ever has been part of the legal basis for consideration in dividing joint property.

Generally speaking, the non-remunerative contributions to a marriage are unquantifiable and cannot be assigned a value. Although that doesn’t always stop lawyers/judges from rushing in where angels fear to tread.

Mrs. Gibson supported Mr. Gibson when he was a nobody, bore him 7 children and devoted her life to rearing them. Mr. Gibson has been an alcoholic pretty much most of that marriage, his first drunk driving conviction was four years into the marriage when they had very small children.

There was certainly no guarantee that Mr. Gibson would ever be big and while some believe he would have made the big time without his wife, it could just as easily be claimed he would have ended up a pathetic drunken bum or dead in a ditch without her stabilizing influence.

The law says she’s entitled to it. End of story.

I have no problems with her getting half of the money, but a legitimate reason must be had.

It's called "community property". We had that back in WA state, and there were very, very few cases of that ugly thing called alimony. Both spouses agreed to be covered by the laws of California when they moved there.

As for the article's saying that the lion's share of his fortune should go to him in recompense for attacks on his privacy, you can bet there were paparazzi scum waiting to invade her privacy, as well. In fact, I'm dead certain they're even more interested in doing so these days.

“Eddie!”

“Eddie!”

“I want to talk to yoooooo! I am American woman now. I want what’s coming to me.”

“Eddie, what have you done for me lately?”

“I want you to be happy. Well, what you want?”

“HALF!!”

How about a 100K per kid she popped out, plus 50K a year working as a housewife? Those are close to fair market rates for those skills.

Don't forget $2,000 per night for sexual services. Isn't that what the high class rate in Hollywood is these days (according to Charlie Sheen)?

Yes, but she will get half because for years of taking care of the physical needs of the fam and for at least attempting repeatedly through counseling and meds to break free from OCD.

Uh, with future Mrs. Gibsons he had better get a pre-nup. Or go ahead and sign most of it over to his heirs now through some kind of trust.

I have a lot of sympathy for the wife who married him when he was broke.

As for future wives, I’ve seen it happen when subsequent wives lay claim to what ought to go to his heirs; it can get messy.

Of course she deserves half. How much money can they both spend anyway?

If Mel weren't so darn hot, I'd be saying the young girl is only after his money...

Not sure what the OCD thing is, but even in NY anything earned after you say “I do”, it’s fifty-fifty.

50K a year massively underestimates the housewife value when you consider 7 kids instead of the average 2 plus the additional duties in the security, entertain and personal assistance areas of being the wife of a *star*.

Don’t forget the overtime! Salary dot come puts the valuation at well over 100K for the average mom.

Without knowing the full details of this marriage, I agree that Mel has been very foolish. Sounds like his wife served their marriage with a glad and open heart, only to have her husband rip her heart out by running off with another person. She is probably borderline 50 in age, has had 7 children and has not worked in 28 years (although having 7 children is by far WORK). Does she deserve half? You bet, but somehow I don’t think that will make her feel any better. I hope they both can come to some sort of forgiveness as any marriage break-up is a terrible tragedy.

I don’t know what else was going on in their marriage

I think she would have been enough, regardless of what else was going on in their marriage.

Man-o-Man! Some of the people responding to this threads' "conservative" credentials are highly dubious (at best!)!

Let's see. If her "share" is 4800 per day thats about 10000 per day for both of them, that HE contributed to their marriage. Assuming that she had a dental job at $15/hr, she contributed about 15*8 = 120/day. So she contributes 120/day vs his 10,000/day.

But she "deserves" half huh? What happened to the conservative credo of self-responsibility?

I've always had a hatful of questions about the feminist ethic of committing grand larceny on a successful man on your way out the door as a way for a "liberated" woman to succeed. The feminist ethic that the best way for a woman to succeed is to latch onto a successful man is sorta schitzoid. A mental defect.

She "deserves" 500 million dollars because he cheated on her? in what way does one make up for the other? and who's setting the 500 million price tag on her heartache? Setting a price on her "heartbreak" just turns her into a whore.

Once he had some cash and influence coming in, she could have taken the time to retrain in practically any kind of job she desired and contributed a significant amount to THEIR lives together. But no. She went the Peg Bundy route sitting on the couch and growing stupid by the light of Oprah and sucking down the bon-bon's as fast as possible.

Nobody on this forum or off will EVER convince me that she has ever done anything in her life to earn $500 million. Entitled maybe as in govt entitlement, since apparently "conservative" women have little hesitation in using Uncle Thug as a club to get their way against a successful man, but "earned", nah!

She's raised 7 children and he's a grown man who puts on make-up and pretends to be someone he isn't. How does he deserve more than her?
