I’m betting it was a koi, which is not a species fishermen generally target. If it is a koi, they aren’t generally catchable with hook and line methods. If it’s not, it’s not likely legal for the guy to keep and raise them.

I'm guessing it's a carp, which is 100% legal to raise in a pond in the state of Georgia.

We used to bow hunt them too! LOTS of fun.

Every once in awhile we would nail one to a tree of some friend that couldn’t make the trip that day! But yes, the rest went to a few of the mom’s gardens.

I seem to recall though, that in France and England, carp is very highly rated as a game fish. (I’m guessing to eat as well?)

Some folks stew em. When I was a kid, I use to sell them by the 5 gallon bucket to the black folks.
