New build hasn't been leaked to torrents -- yet
Microsoft's Windows 7 is perhaps one of the most hotly anticipated tech products of the year. Its beta builds have thus far showcased both polish and Microsoft's willingness to improve and take constructive criticism. Microsoft has over 2,000 planned bug fixes for the Release Candidate phase, and recent builds have given users just a taste of the promising new OS's potential.
Hot on the heels of the leak of RC build 7077 to the torrent world earlier this month, Microsoft has delivered a major milestone build to OEM partners and TAP gold customers. Microsoft reportedly compiled the new build, 7100.0.winmain_win7rc.090421-1700 (build 7100, for short), on Tuesday, and has already began distribution.
While some are likely eagerly awaiting the build to hit torrents, for home testing, Microsoft may actually beat leakers to the punch. Microsoft announced via its Partners page plans to launch a semi-public distribution of the release candidate by May 5th to MSDN/TechNet customers. The official release will invariably also be shared by these customers over torrent. The 7100 build seems a likely target for the release.
There's potential, though, that the posting could be a mistake, as a Microsoft Online Chat Concierge spokesperson commented, "Currently the Windows 7 RC has not been available through the TechNet subscription yet, only the Microsoft OEM partners such as Dell, Siemens are taking part in the RC's this period of test."
Regardless, whenever DailyTech get its hands on release candidate 7100, a features update piece can be expected. Until then, like the rest of community, we have to wait and see.
Any clue as to when this will be available on new computers in the stores.... I need a new laptop but refuse to buy one with Vista on it?
Linux seems to work just fine for most needs.
Vista with SP1 isn’t bad at all - Microsoft will have a program that gives free upgrades to 7 if you buy your new system within a certain time window - but I don’t know what that window is going to be.
Probably looking at a window of 5-7 months for distributors, however my guess is that MS wants this out by Christmas.
The biggest problem that I see, is that Win7 will NOT upgrade a WinXP machine. There is an upgrade path from Vista to Win7, but if you have an XP machine you must back up all of your data, and plan to have your disk wiped clean, so Win7 can install.
Personally, I see no real reason to make the change to Win7 at this point in time.
How can those of us who missed out on the original release of the beta give it a whirl?
That is why I suggest installing it on a new partition or drive.
VP for a Microsoft Gold Partner -The beta code runs well, boots much faster. MS admitted to us that is this is really Vista SP3 but named it Windows 7 for marketing reasons.
Use a torrent service. Just use a torrent service that lets you know if it’s fake or the correct build, they will also have the installation keys for you. Don’t worry about legality, MS wants you to do this.
Like I said on another site that 7 works so much better, faster, cleaner and more stable that Vista in retrospect is like a alpha-build. And I like Vista FWIW.
the death of the mac...thought you would want to know.
That’s a pretty odd thing to say.
The issue I have, is that WinXP enjoys ~85% marketshare of all installed PCs. Why would you make a new OS, that will very likely result in users losing data? This is a customer relations nightmare. “Here, buy my new $300 OS, that does nothing really substancially more or better than your current OS - and I will wipe all of your data, your tax records, your digital pictures and other ‘priceless’ data from your PC for you”.
Previous versions of Windows let me upgrade my OS, and they also changed FAT32 to NTFS without destroying my data. So, why do I lose any data that I fail to backup, if I upgrade from WinXP? I can upgrade WinXP to Vista, and you can upgrade Vista to Win7 without losing data. Why can’t I upgrade WinXP to Win7?!?
can I still get a beta anywhere?
I am still on the 7000 but am going to go to 7100 here as soon as I can download it. I notice the expiration date has been increased from August 09 to February 2010, I hope that doesn’t mean a delay for it’s public release.
asked and answered...my bad.
thanks.
