A dog that a Wildomar man once saved from being put to sleep threw himself between his master and a marauding mountain lion at Lake Elsinore on Tuesday. The dog -- a mixed breed named Hoagie -- and the mountain lion fought a ferocious battle at one of the lake's campgrounds that saved the man's life and nearly killed the dog, who was rushed into four hours of surgery, according to authorities. "There's no question the dog saved his life," said Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino.

Good doggie!
Angels with flea collars ...
Good Dog! Think a cat would do that?
Gentlemen of the jury: The best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it the most. A mans reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog.
Gentleman of the jury: A mans dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his masters side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.
If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies, and when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death.

A true lesson in pure unselfishness.
They give their all.
PING!
Oh my yes. Prayers for the little fellow.
Awww. They really are. One of my angels died this past October and everytime I pass her photo on my bookshelf - the last good one I have of her, I tear up. I loved that girl more than words can say.
You are right in most cases - I KNOW my dobe would protect me - unless I was attacked outside and it was raining, lol. Dobes REFUSE to go outside when it rains!
Absolutely. :)
I’d bet money “Hoagie” is a pit mix.
Good job, Hoagie!
Nope. One of my friends and I were debating the attributes b/t cats and dogs.
While I know cats are good companions, comforters, and have on many occasions saved owners by waking them in a fire or something, here’s my short list of the things we make our dogs do for us that no cat can touch. Feel free to add your own:
- Rescue Dogs (to people lost in mountains, under rubble, in crashes and so many places people just can’t get to, let alone smell)
- Cadaver Dogs
- Drug dogs
- Police dogs
- Aid dogs - for the blind, disabled, etc.
- Transportation (e.g. sled dogs)
- Circus dogs (for our entertainment)
- Work dogs (can pull small sleds with wood or other gear, similar to the sled dogs)
Got any more?
Just like in “Where the Red Fern Grows”!
I am partial to dogs, but cats have cool things that they do too, like eat little critters.
Most important of all: Companion Dogs
What a great story. I’m saying a prayer for this little guy’s recovery.
Dogs are simply awesome, however, I don’t know if my baby would do this. He literally can not hurt a fly. I watched him play with one on the porch over the weekend. He would put it in his mouth and spit it out and then nuzzle it. Cutest thing I have ever seen, but I won’t trust him to attack something! lol
That’s odd.
None of my Dobermans ever minded rain.
Some of them even went out of their way to make a total mess of themselves in every puddle they could find...:))
Arthur would even go so far as to go out in the back yard and dig until one of the underground springs started flowing up into the hole and then lay in it.
[and then he got a bath before he was allowed back in the house]...;-D
