The VAT is nothing more than a national sales tax. Again Obama is breaking his pledge not to raise taxes on Americans making less than $250,000. It will also affect corporate earnings thus having effects on 401k’s and IRA.’s. (click the links in the article)

The VAT tax is not a Sales Tax. It’s a manufacturing hurdle. Dell builds a CPU and puts Vista on it. Value has been added. Tax it. I take that CPU and install our software on it. Value has been added. Tax it. Every CD I install with an additional art product on adds value. Tax it.
I will make a fortune bypassing these taxes as a smuggler and tax cheat, I would consider it to be my patriotic duty... bring it on ... it guarantees the RATS defeat.
trying to enforce a VAT tax would be Guaranteed Full Employment for bureaucrats and accountants. Staffing at the IRS would probably have to triple in order to keep track of it.
If VAT goes in, I will strive to buy even more thingsused thru garage sales, craig list, and Ebay. My garden will grow bigger and I undertake even more do-it-yourself projects.

If you do all of that and become a registered Democrat, you might be appointed as a Cabinet member. :p
