You find it. Government keeps it. You earn it, government takes it.
Does government understand things like motive and incentive?
£100,000
Thats like $10 million US in 4 years, or enough to buy a loaf of bread

He should heat the rings in a fire and see if this inscription is on the inside of one of them:
Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

The pudding tasted like it just emerged from the oven, and the terrier was as yippy and annoying as any bred today.

How do they know it was a Saxon thief? Isn't this profiling? After all, there were Angles, Jutes, Normans, Danes, Welsh and others living in Yorkshire at the time.

Or a thief. Lol. Perhaps a common, hiding his property from any form of Gov’t.

Here in the US, the metal detector digger keeps 100%. The US Dept of the Interior politicians have been trying for years to make it a crime to dig up artifacts and claim them for personal use. I believe the finder's fee in Britain is the equivalent of $100....
To: vetvetdoug
No, they get compensated at a higher rate. Your right though, if it's deemed ‘treasure’, Gov’t takes.

I thought they paid well so people would make it available rather than just sell it.

As the pieces don’t look very fine, it would be very tempting just to melt them down, especially if the finder gets as little as you say.
To: BGHater
Govt takes treasure trove, but pays for it. It’s not as bad as all that.
That way this stuff ends up in Museums.

Lol. You sound like Indiana Jones.
