Pitbull attacks owner 24 hours after adoption

COEUR D'ALENE -- A pitbull adopted from the Kootenai Humane Society attacked its new owner a day after it was adopted and then got away when police tried to corral the animal.

During the attack the victim, Kip Legaard, called 9-1-1 and when police officers arrived and tried to taser the dog it ran away. Legaard, who lost nearly two pints of blood in the attack is now angry because he had been told by the Humane Society the pit bull could be a family dog.

Kip Legaard adopted the pitbull named Mojo on Friday. He says the humane society told him the dog was nice.

"The lady's like he's so sweet, so sweet, so sweet," Kip said.

On Saturday Kip says that out of nowhere the dog suddenly lunged at him.

"All of a sudden BOOM the dog had my arm," he said. "It felt like someone put my arm in a hydraulic press."

Legaard's arm was bleeding and then the dog attacked again. He managed to free himself and run inside into the bathroom. Bleeding from his wounds Legaard called 9-1-1 and then waited until the dog went downstairs before he bolted from his house into a waiting ambulance.

"The dog followed me out to the ambulance ... the guys are like run, run," he said.

Now, as his wounds heal Legaard still can't believe what happened and he can't believe the Kootenai Humane Society let someone adopt that dog.

"I think they should do way more assessment on the animals behavior before they adopt it out," Kip said.

Eric Hess is the behavioral specialist for the Kootenai Humane Society and he did assess Mojo prior to adoption. Hess says the behavior assessment is 15 pages long and the pitbull passed it.

Before any dog goes out Hess analyzes the dog, how do they act when they're fed, when they're played with, walked, how do they react to children and how do they react to strangers. Mojo passed every scenario Hess threw at him.

"If I wasn't confident in adopting the dog out he wouldn't have passed his behavioral analysis in the beginning," Hess said.

Hess added that Legaard did lie on his application form to adopt the dog. Legaard said he didn't have other dogs in the house when in fact he does. Those other animals, the Humane Society says, could've triggered the attack.

Mojo, meanwhile, remains on the loose.

Perhaps the Humane Society forgot to tell him the dog's first name was 'Bad'.

When I worked at the shelter we went out did a house check before & after the adoption. We had to talk to the person's vet or the one they planned to use. They had to give references & if they didn't own the house the landlord had to give a letter stating he was willing to allow dogs.

It used to be so easy to adopt and now it is much harder. I am not afraid of dogs but some of the dogs I dealt with were not adoptable. They were just too far abused IMHO. I had more bites from cats then dogs when I worked there. IMO cat bites hurt more. I love cats but I liked working with dogs much more.

I had a friend that had a brindle pit.

He was a pretty good dog but he was an inch away from being out of control. I never trusted that dog.

That sumbitch ate my leather jacket! Ripped the zippers right out!

Miserable mutt.

The Humane Society had a perfect opportunity to put the dog down so it could not be adopted yet it allowed this crazy man eating beast on the public.

I do not believe that pit bulls have any use in our society and cause great damage.

A long time ago, when America was a much saner, common-sense place, this type(not breed) flourished.

Who can know, or even imagine or suspect, what might “provoke” a dog of that breed?

Speaking of leg off...

Pits are all mouth and neck.

I bet they dont lunge so well if you break their legs(in an attack).
I am not condoning animal abuse, but I dont condone being killed either.

I have a lab. He is a big puss. He does however have a big bark.
Thats all I require of a dog. I can protect myself.

In fact, part of the problem here is that people raise animals to be dominant.

NEVER let an animal be the alpha in your home.

It's always funny to read armchair judges--of course, YOU wouldn't have run, YOU have the perfect reaction in every situation! This guy ran--so he deserves what he gets!

When will we learn that these vicious animals are an element contributing to this society of crudity we all claim to hate? No, ban some four-letter-word-spouting TV show and everything will be fine, but discourage the buying of vicious killing things because "It's mah right!"? P'shaw!

I got bit by a feral cat that took up residence in my garage one winter...so much junk in the garage I couldn't catch it...but I let my dog out through the garage..The cat sure did look sickly.

First thing I did was put out some milk for it, to see if it would drink (rabid animals won't drink) after several days of putting out food, I could get close enough to grab it....It sunk its teeth into my index finger and wouldn't let go until I dumped it into a waiting box...

I took it to a county shelter 10 miles away and told them what happened. My finger was still bleeding and had swollen to twice its size.

A couple of hours later I got a call from the health department and told to see my doctor within 72 hours...they would keep the cat for 10 days to check for rabies.

the next day I got an appointment with the doctor and half of my hand was swollen...(one good thing is that temporarily the wrinkles disappeared)

According to the doctor cat bites are the nasty because their needle sharp teeth can go to the bone and end up with bone infections...

The health department followed up on the bite to make sure I had been to the doctor etc. They euthanized the cat after 10 days and sent the head to Lansing, Michigan..

I was notified by the Public Health Dept there was no rabies...In the county I live in we have rabies outbreaks periodically..
