Stuck in a crappy job - tough
money ^ | July 8, 2009 | Jessica Dickler

Unhappy at work? You're not alone. The recession has left a lot of people out of a job, but many of those still employed aren't very happy at the office. That's because layoff survivors are often stuck with increased workloads, fewer benefits and even less pay. But they're staying put -- at least for now.

Fifty-four percent of employed Americans plan to look for a new job once the economy rebounds, according to a survey from Adecco Group North America. The sentiment is even stronger among younger workers. Of those ages 18-29, 71% say they are likely to look for new jobs once the economy turns around, the survey said.

"In times of uncertainly people tend to hunker down and protect their turf, as a result of that they are staying in their current positions," explained Gautam Godhwani, CEO of job search site Simply Hired.

It was work before I had to eat a 25% pay cut. It still sucks.

People like to feel they have options. Just knowing that you could walk down the street and get something else makes people happier. To feel stuck in a job (any job) and have no expectations that you have a way out can make someone feel like a trapped rat.

I’m in a position which will likely go away in 6 to 18 months. Were the economy good I’d be out hunting, but there’s little out there, so I stay maintaining old equipment to keep things running until it’s all replaced by a new vendor. And I’ll just tough it out as long as I can.

Yeah, I dunno. Ever buy a rectal thermometer? And you see the little tag, “Inspected By Number 39”? Meet Number 39.

The worst part isn’t the cuts they are making, it’s that the management’s attitude has changed from merely obnoxious to near-Simon-LeGree evil. It’s bad enough that they’ve taken away any hope of a raise (our cost of living is done through the merit process.COL increases the scale, but its not realized till your eval/merit) but taking away our retirement match (which we got because we gave up retirement health care..how is THAT for reneging?) really bites, especially after last year’s losses. Can’t wait till it really gets jacked up when ZerO takes over health care.

As for me, a native who as a kid wanted to leave it so bad had come to the conclusion that it is an OK state after all.

Columbia (not my hometown) has been very good to me. For the most part I can’t complain a whole lot.
