GM wants to cancel its contract with the Stillwater mine as part of its bankruptcy reorganization that infused the company with $50 billion in government loans.
Platinum is mined in just two other countries Russia and South Africa and Schweitzer says canceling the contract would put the United States at a strategic risk and hurt the mining industry.

Fox just interviewed a mining company that lost GM’s contract..while GM retained contracts with Russia and South Africa.
Isn’t someone we all know visting both of those places this week?

Hmmmmmm. I thought with the "world is going to end" craze and everyone buying Gold and other precious metals, this mine would be humming!

Better to lose the jobs than to lose the environment, because mining causes global warming and a host of other problems.

Some talking head just today was saying, “Why on earth is he going to South Africa??” At the time, I wondered the same.
Platinum is so outrageously scarce that it is approaching a point where it will be cheaper to fuse two lesser elements into platinum.
