MADRID – A Spanish woman believed to have become the world's oldest new mother when she gave birth at 66 has died at 69, leaving behind twin toddlers, newspapers reported Wednesday.

Maria del Carmen Bousada, who reportedly died Saturday, gave birth in December 2006 as a single mother after getting in vitro fertilization treatment at a clinic in Los Angeles. The births ignited a firestorm of debate over how old is too old for a new mother, and how much responsibility fertility clinics have over who gets treatments.

Seems oh so wrong to leave these kids without a mother who had them for the sake of her ego ...

What a tragedy- she should have had at least 20 years with her children

I think using all those hormones to get and stay pregnant causes tumors. Have suspected this may have contributed to Liz Edwards’ cancer.

As if we didn’t see this coming.

God knew best in the reasons he gave mothers certain times in their lives to bear children.

LOL! If pregnancy for ego reasons was condemned, half the parents in the world would have to cop a plea

They children will die at a younger age also.

Studies have shown that the older the parents at the time of the birth of the child...the child will have a shorter life. Something about the length of the telemeres...(I think)

I am convinced that "artificial reproduction" --- whether it involves in-vitro, hormonal manipulation of post-menopausal females, or even "just" no-sex insemination --- is just as wrong-headed as artificial contraception.

I don't care if it's done to animals. All this stuff may be a legitimate part of veterinary medicine. But human person find an essential meaning in natural sexual relations--- and I say "essential" because if the meaning isn't there, it's not just absent, it's positively wrong.

This whole set-up demeans the child from the first moment of his existence, making him not a gift of personal love, but an experiment and a lab product.

Furthermore, human children, as persons, derive their psychological security, their identity and their providence, in large part, from their fathers. To bring children into this world fatherless by design is unjust: it deprives them of their patrimony, which is their birthright.

Some children are fatherless by chance. N child should be fatherless by choice.

No cause of death listed - I hope it had nothing to do with having these children.

God's perfect plan was for young people to have children. When you mess with God's plan, you get a mess in return.

Pray for these unfortunate children.

Because everything about Elizabeth & John Edwards is fraudulent, I have to ask: Who even knows if she has cancer?! She seems to be doing remarkably well (opened a furniture store recently after campaigning for him and lamenting the brevity of the time she had left w/her young children) for a woman whose husband seemed set to run as Devoted Husband ‘08, Grieving Widower ‘12.

“The births ignited a firestorm of debate over how old is too old for a new mother...”

Guess the debate is settled now.

Is that because of the age of the egg cells.

I had my last son at 41. I guess he’s doomed.

I had babies at 23 and 26, and when the nest was empting out, we adopted 2 from China. We are now 51 and 50 with a 6 and 8 yr old still at home.

I was raised by foster grandparents - I was 2 when they took me - they were 60 and 62. I was in my 40’s by the time they passed away.

My 25 yr old daughter has a 4 yr old and 10 month old. She could be in a car accident tomorrow and I would outlive her.

There are no guarantees in this life.

That said, I do think trying to outwit God designed biology is arrogant and risky. If the desire for children is there, there are thousands in need of a home. Then plan for their future as if you won’t be there. Actually, do that no matter how old (or young) you are.
