Online Audio: The Voice/Vision Holocaust Survivor Oral History Archive

From the Announcement:

With some 300 interviews in its collection–more than 100 of which are online at http://holocaust.umd.umich.edu–the Voice/Vision Holocaust Survivor Oral History Archive at the University of Michigan-Dearborn is a resource that’s useful to people around the world.

“Having interviews available online 24 hours a day, seven days a week offers unprecedented accessibility to our collection,” said Jamie Wraight, curator and historian of the Archive.
“It’s what sets us apart from other Holocaust survivor oral history projects. People can hear the personal stories of Holocaust survivors, in their own voices, no matter where in the world they are.”

[Snip]

“Other oral history collections exist but not on the Web,” [Librarian Barbara] Kriigel noted. “Kids are comfortable with technology and the Internet. That’s why we do this. We’re doing it for future generations. Someday, the survivors will be gone but this Archive will live forever.”

I was just talking with my 17 and 21 year old daughters about what liberalism has done to men and women. How it has emasculated men and enslaved women.

Liberals are doing the very thing with women that they condemned conservatives (religious) for, making them just sex objects. The did this by brainwashing women that they aren’t really liberated and free until they become sex objects for men by their own free will.

By convincing them that they aren’t complete until they are *free* sexually, they’ve given men just what they want and tell women that they have no value unless they put out.

So, women are continuing to be enslaved by this mentality, but they have been tricked into doing it to themselves.

Men don’t need to be sensitive, wussy partners for women. If women want someone to identify with so much emotionally, they have girlfriends. Let men be men, compassionate and caring, without expecting them to act like women, like is becoming so prevalent in our culture.

Well, because they were stupid enough to believe it actually. (ps, I’m wearing my bra!)<<<

Well!!! LOL, I am not, but will if I go out into public.

I am getting nervous, listening to the police calls, for the women in Las Vegas are more dangerous then the men.

It is the women who are attacking people.

It is the women who are taking over foreclosed homes and apartments.

It is the women, who are doing the robbing.

Women are even doing the car-jackings.

Most of the young men, are trying to steal a 12 pack of beer at the local 7-11 store.

And getting caught.

And another small item, that more of you should check, for the dispatcher sent an Officer out to check on the homeowners report of someone stealing his electric.

Said the adjoining home had been foreclosed a few days ago and he had been in him yard and took time to look at his electric meter and found they had hooked into his power supply.

It is easy on some of them, I have a couple plugins on my pole and the old box even has a couple.

Very wise and very true.

God made two sexes, he felt we needed 2 sexes.

I agree, it takes 2 pulling together to make a team.

By making women feel they had to share sex and could get an abortion, they ruined the “family”.

>>>By spoiling them. Not you personally, of course, but IMO when parents try to GIVE their children a better life than they themselves had, it just created the entitlement attitude that has got us where we are today.<<<

Oh, no, that’s NOT what they did...
They considered leaving a more fertile soil, well managed woodland, abundant wildlife, a vibrant living history to draw knowledge from, and preserving the opportunity for all to become all they were willing to work to be as our heritage. It was up to me to earn my place in that world and to learn how to do all I could and to pass that on.

Things like my Great Grandfather who introduced Women’s Suffrage that finally gave women in Maryland the right to vote. My daughters, granddaughters and great granddaughter along with all others benefited from that. (though none of them currently live in Maryland, it was something that spread.)

The spoiling I got consisted of some outstanding privileges such as spending two weeks at Don Kepler’s hands-on wilderness survival training program, meeting and spending several days with J.I. Rodale (Organic Gardening), getting to spend a day fishing with Ernest Hemingway, meeting 4 Presidents, getting to know 2 U.S. Senators very well, as well as one Representative, three Governors and the whole time, being challenged to learn from the good in all those opportunities and suppressing the trivial and undesirable found in them. I was encouraged to come out of my shell with such tasks as personally having to hand deliver information to the West Wing of the White House on numerous occasions. Being always reminded that we have responsibilities attached to all privileges.

Those are the types of ‘spoiling’ I am talking about.

Seeing the shenanigans taking place today, I feel I have failed somehow in not being able to shield future generations from the shallow, egocentric, power-hungry JERKS that we have in power today.

Very true. But without any of the benefits women had before the 'sexual revolution.' Like a marriage for life, finanacial security if your husband wasn't a gambler or such, a good stable home to raise children in - and then secure, happy children as a result. Now women are expected to do it 'all' - make money, raise the kids alone (of course, the kids are really raised by a day care or nanny-type), and put out for nothing as well.

We haven't come a long way, have we? ;)

Then you're disagreeing for a reason I can't see. The boomers have done just the opposite with their youth (and many of the previous generation to their boomer offspring). Not all of course, just a generalization. But enough to have damaged our society, which is reflected in the majority of voters wanting socialism.

UMich GovDocs Moves - Update your Links!

The University of Michigan Library has redesigned its website and, as a result, the venerable University of Michigan Documents Center site has a new look and new URLs.

The resources portal is here: http://www.lib.umich.edu/government-documents-center/explore . The URL for the main government documents page is here: http://www.lib.umich.edu/government-documents-center .

Old links should forward now but the forwarding is only temporary. If you have linked extensively within the site, UMich provides help with an Excel file listing the new link equivalents to pages on the old site.

New: Watchdog Groups Release Database Detailing Earmarks and Campaign Contributions

From the Blog Post:

Two of Washington, D.C.’s most reliable and respected nonpartisan watchdogs joined forces today and released a comprehensive database linking campaign contributions with earmarked spending by lawmakers.

Taxpayers for Common Sense, a national budget watchdog, provided data documenting more than 20,000 earmarked spending provisions worth over $35 billion. The Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks money-in-politics on its website, OpenSecrets.org, provided data detailing $226.8 million in campaign contributions and lobbying expenditures.

Welcome to Our New Blog

Welcome to NARAtions, a blog about online public access to the records of the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). (Yes, we know the proper spelling of narration contains two r’s, but we couldn’t resist the pun!)

We hope to hear from NARA researchers and anyone interested in the Archives on topics related to online access and historical research in general. The plan is to post questions periodically and encourage you to share your opinions, ideas, and stories with us. We will also post news items about descriptions or digitized archival materials available online.

http://www.resourceshelf.com/2009/08/14/web-resources-free-legal-documents-recap-and-open-jurist/

Web Resources: Free Legal Resources (Recap, OpenRegs and Open Jurist)

Today, ars technica alerts us to a new service, free, from Princeton’s Center for Information Technology Policy.

From the Article:

Federal court documents are currently made available to the public through a crufty system called PACER. For eight cents per page, users can download filings and other relevant documents associated with individual cases.

[Snip]

A team led by CITP director Ed Felten has devised a novel means of boosting the availability of PACER documents outside of the paywall. They have created a new Firefox extension called RECAP that seamlessly replicates PACER content and uploads it to a mirror hosted by the Internet Archive. When RECAP users browse the PACER site, the content that they pay to view will be uploaded to the mirror by the Firefox extension. Users will get free access to the documents that are already hosted by the mirror.

Over time, free PACER content will accumulate at the Internet Archive’s mirror, making it unnecessary for additional users to pay PACER for access to those files. The unrestricted availability of the mirrored legal documents will empower legal researchers and members of the public who can’t simply pass the access costs along to clients as most lawyers do.

This blog post provides an idea of how much material is available at this time.

The ars Technica article also mentions OpenRegs.com.

A website established in June by Mercatus Center researcher Jerry Brito and programmer Peter Snyder to help people navigate federal regulations.

See Also: Michael Arrington at TechCrunch takes on the legality of the service.

In late May, 2009, ResourceShelf posted about the “just released” Open Jurist project who’s aim it is to compile, organize, and make searchable opinions (for free) At that time the database contained about 647,000 opinions.

How awful to have your freezer go out while you are so busy harvesting. I’m glad to hear it’s something you can probably fix. Also glad you were able to process/find alternate storage for most of the stuff. It’s a good thing you discovered it early.

http://internetarchive.wordpress.com/2009/04/29/the-library-of-congress-at-your-fingertips/

The Library of Congress at Your Fingertips

To visit The Library of Congress has long been thought of as a distinguished event for the privileged few. Most people throughout the world are unable to get to Washington D.C., so the plethora of resources housed in the library has remained untapped for the general population. However, as the Library of Congress continues to digitize more and more of the material in their collections, universal access to human knowledge seems in much closer reach. A child on the coast of Oregon or a CEO in Russia will be able to browse the material in the Library of Congress without the expensive plane ticket to D.C. Furthermore, books that were once considered too fragile to lend out will be available for use digitally.

The Library of Congress officially opened its scanning center this past January, and footage from the launch is now available on Internet Archive. The current holdings of Library of Congress books on Internet Archive can be found within their collection page, which now boasts more than 30,000 items.

http://www.archive.org/details/library_of_congress

Internet Archive is extremely pleased to be a part of this wonderful project, which we see as a perfect example of the far-reaching possibilities of digital archiving and open sharing.

Ireland’s Minister of State for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food is a Kitchen Gardener!

I’m lucky to have a front and back garden that’s big enough to grow some food but
not too big to manage.

Before I cook a meal I always see what I can add to the meal
fresh from the garden. Growing food to me is richly satisfying - a healthful pursuit
for mind, body and spirit.

George Bernard Swaw, even though he earned his money writing plays, stated “gardening
is the only unquestionably useful job”. The same can be said for farming. Indeed,
food production is not just useful, it is essential.

Selling from your front yard

On a sunny weekend, as I take a stroll with my wife, I see lots of yard sales in
my neighbourhood. But on a recent walk I counted three people selling something
other than old records, books and clothing.
Honey and flowers!

Tokyo Green Space reports on downtown Tokyo rice farm

On a side street in Ginza, I noticed a rice farm and met Ginza Farm’s CEO Iimura
Kazuki and his assistant who were tending the rice and two cute ducklings.

Shop
clerks and construction clerks stopped by to admire the rice in its mid-summer
glory.
