I saw Grammar comment about some of the tragedies in his life on “Shatner’s Raw Nerve” (biography channel, IIRC). It was just on. You might find a video clip or two at the show’s website.
If anything could make a man - me included - turn to drugs, a string of tragedies like that certainly could.

How he’s managed to stay sane is beyond me.
And his two friends—his TV show producer and his wife—were on the first plane that was rammed into the World Trade Center on 9/11.
btw: what’s wrong on having a Playboy model as a wife? That’s what all heterosexual men—and some gay ones—aspire too...
He was a liberal when he was on drugs. He became more conservative when he sobered up.
