If the first three numbers indicate state of issuance how can my number be different than my husbands and my Mothers as all were issued in the same state many years apart. Is this a recent thing?

I have no idea but I can often recognize someone is from PA when the first 3 of their ssn is the same as mine

Ditto with my husband and his state and ssn

The SSNs’ are not random as far as I know and the code reflects somethign about you- where born or perhaps, where card is obtained using a residence there

Most states have more than a single 3 digit number assigned.Texas has 449-467, While Alaska only has one, 574.
