I'm a n00b too. In fact, my first Mac ever. Had my 3Gs since about a week after they came out. The number of apps is overwhelming. Here's my list; I've mostly gone for the free ones so far, UOS.
Weather Channel (standard)
Google Earth - It's a trip playing with that one.
Flashlight - I used to use my Razr for such things, but being able to choose a color is great.
White Noise (I set mine for sea shore). It does help quiet the mind and help you get to sleep.
AOL Radio - I can pick up Rush on the go, you'll have to check his station listing against what's available through AOL streaming.
Bloomberg - This is an excellent stock and market app.
Wall Street Journal
Forbes
pUniverse - this is one of the few I've paid for so far. It uses the compass and GPS position, to show the night sky. Want to know what star or planet you see in the sky at night, fire up the app and point towards the object and it will tell you what it is. Very cool!
myWirless - AT&T app, allows you to check your wireless bill, plan options and data usage. Can pay your bill. Usefull
GPSLite - Might end up buying the full version.
ESPN Sports Center
What's on? - TV listing app. Supports all providers (even OTA and Satellite) in all states. Cool app really. Blows comcast's app out of the water.
Book: Time Machine, Common Sense, Frankenstein, Shakespeare. - Most of those books are available through a reader provided by "BeamItDown". It's a unique reader for the iPhone that makes use of the built in accelerometers which scrolls the page based on the angle of the phone. You can speed up or slow down the scrolling just by tilting the phone. You can also set it to page by a tap. Lots of other books I haven't gotten yet.
