What do you do when a wing is torn off your F15? If you are Captain Zivi Nedivi, of the Israeli airforce, you break off from your training exercise and return to base. You've only got one wing, but you make up for that by flying twice as fast. The F15 Eagle collided with an A4 Skyhawk.

Thank God for weight to thrust ratio. I saw video of a carrier landing like this just last week.

The incident was real, but the video is a reenactment, and a poor one at that.

I wonder why he didn’t bail out but I have read you are a half inch shorter after punching out and would never do it a second time if you did.

Well.. jokes aside.. bailing out is not a sure thing. It is actually quite hazardous. There were two of them.

Secondly, he did NOT know the extent of his damage. If you watch the video he says that if had been able to see (the fuel spray made in unable for him to see) he would have ejected.

He thought that he had “minor” damage as opposed to having the darn wing missing.

BTW, the Israelis use the F-15 in ways that even the primary designers never envisioned. It is truly a wonder weapon for Israel.

It is their primary Nuclear delivery system

I remember reading that Chuck Yeager was pretty seriously injured during an ejection once. He said ejection was intended to keep you alive, not uninjured.

Retired by USAF in 1971, but flew with ANG units until 1979.

An amazing aircraft. In the early '80s it was used to fire ASAT weapons into orbit.

And the Israelis aren't the only ones who would use it to deliver nukes. Japan is ready to do the same thing on short notice.

I was at an airshow in San Antonio about 1985 and had a conversation with a Louisiana Air Guard pilot about the incident. He noted the capacity for the airframe's shape to still generate lift minus a wing given enough airspeed. He noted that the IAF pilot came in really hot on landing.
In touring the cockpit of that Air Guard F-15, I still remember how surprised I was that it smelled like a work truck minus the coffee stench. Got to watch that proud Air Guard pilot corkscrew into the clouds after a short take off run, maybe three thousand feet out then afterburners. Up and gone. Love that memory!
