Yeah, that came about from the end of the Civil War and the Southern Democrats (what they were before/after the war). IIRC, Nathan Bedford Forrest was one of the first leaders of the Klan, which was used by the Democrats in hopes of restoring the social “order” that existed before the war.
More than insurgents. They were a tool (and to a great degree populated) by Southern Democrats.
This dirty, rotten scoundrel has done great harm to the Constitution.
They were terrorists. They fought the newly established government. They were Democrats (and they specifically included Republicans among their hate list).
