Oh my ... the drunken sailor brings back memories.

I had the good fortune, or bad fortune, depending on view point a young Navy CPO that got to cross deck to a Aussie detroyer.

I never knew there were so many drinking songs and ditties, every port we hit I learned knew .. and I swear that some were made up as we went. Most had some sort of activity involved .. such as diving under the table. Last one still above the table top bought rounds. I paid dearly until I learned the trick .. watch the singer take a deep breath before the next phrase and head for under the table .... nevr did figure half of em out.

NEVER NEVER NEVER ... EVER go out drinking with Aussie Sailors. “Hay maite ..letz go geddah “Poat o pizz” It will be the last thing you remember .. maybe for days.

“Have a Drink on Me” by AC/DC or am I the only person here who was of that age in the 80’s?

Yes, that one works. It is a bit different, though - the song stands out as a warm tribute to their former frontman... and that's on an album that was intended in part to be a "wake" for Bon Scott.

Based on the lyrics alone, Have A Drink On Me seems like a great drinking tune. For me, though, it comes off as a bit maudlin (despite the band's intentions that it be celebratory of the way Bon lived).

Great song, though. Just a bit deeper in meaning than the average drinking tune.

The Revelry of the Dying
AIR: “Away with Melancholy”

We meet ‘neath the sounding rafters,
And the walls around are bare.
As they echo our peals of laughter,
It seems that the dead are all there.

Chorus:
So stand by your glasses steady,
This world is a world of lies.
Here’s a toast to the dead already;
Hurrah! for the next man who dies.

Cut off from the land that bore us
Betrayed by the land we find.
All the good men have gone before us
And only the dull left behind.
Chorus

Who minds to the dust returning?
Who shrinks from the sable shore,
Where the high and haughty yearning
Of the soul shall be no more?
Chorus

In flaming Spads and Camels
With wings made of wood and steel
We gamble for stakes that are mortal
With cards that are stacked for the deal.
Chorus

We loop in the purple sunset
We spin in the silver dawn;
With a plume of smoke behind us
To show where our comrades have gone
Chorus

Time was when we frowned on others,
We thought we were wiser then;
But now let us all be brothers,
For we never may meet again.
Chorus

But a truce to this mournful story,
For death is a distant friend.
So here’s to a life of glory,
And a laurel crown each at the end.
Chorus

Two doors down, there's a barstool,

That knows me by name......(snip)

From the hotel, to the barroom

is just a stumble, and a fall

Sometimes when it gets bad

I've been known to crawl.... ;-)

This is an Irish classic covered by Metallica.

With all respect, it's an Metallica's cover of Thin Lizzy's cover of an Irish classic.

Thin Lizzy's version

mak5,
My goodness, we must have gone to the same bar together. Those songs were basically on a loop in a beer joint I enjoyed during my college years in the 70’s.

SNL's Irish Drinking Songs Skit

You might recognize a very young Conan O'Brien in that one.

Of course, my ALL TIME fave: “Friggin in the Riggin” (aka on the Good Ship Venus). This is a 19th Century English drinking song, with the best version being by Robert Biggs and the Sex Pistols.
