LOS ANGELES Ellen DeGeneres is dancing her way onto "American Idol," replacing Paula Abdul as the show's fourth judge. In a Wednesday release from Fox and the show's producers, DeGeneres described herself as a longtime fan of the hit singing contest.
Abdul, who announced she was quitting the show amid a contract dispute, had been replaced by a succession of guest judges as "American Idol" started next season's auditions.
DeGeneres, host of a daytime talk show, wasn't among them. She will join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi for the ninth season starting in January.

bye bye ...
They just lost a viewer! Its time when this lesbian pervert who insults conservatives at every turn get called on the mat and viewers tune off.
Great! We get to watch a queer judge that will judge over queer contestants.
Hahahaha!
Ellen Degenerate onboard!!!
My prayers have been answered. Mrs. Jazzy says “Buh-bye” to American Idol!!!
Wow! Talk about dumb.
Wow....WORST CHOICE EVER....will KILL their ratings....
I don’t know the back story but I believe they’ve made a bad trade.
This won’t go over as well as they hope.
I realize people made fun of Abdul but she had a way of softening some of the harsher criticism, which the show needed.
Something is very queer about that choice
Don’t they realize Adam lost?

I mean, picking someone who has no connection to the music industry, isn't a successful solo singer, and someone who has an incredible habit of shooting her mouth off in interviews... We've watched our last full season of Idol.
Trading a crazy Californian for a queer bitter Texan....bad deal...I’ll take Paula any day.
That's fishy...
What does Ellen know about music?
She can ask all the gals if the rug matches the drapes....
Keep an eye on Big Brother on CBS. It might be a gay against a female athlete. This should be interesting since it seems like they are trying to get as much exposure as possible by trying to win these game shows.
You’re freaking kidding me. I caught a bit of her on “So You Think You Can Dance” and her inane prattling was a distraction. It was like listening to fingernails on a blackboard.
No one cares about the flaming fruit on BB.
We’ll no longer watch.
What?? Oh yeah, they picked Ellen Degenerate because she has so much musical experience. /sarc
I’d have the same objections about most other comedians. I don’t care about her being gay, but I don’t want to listen to her trying to be funny when she’s talking to the contestants. Her style of comedy can be really funny sometimes, but not in this setting. I just don’t see her playing well against Simon, or either of the worthless judges on there who never say anything interesting. I don’t see what Ellen has to do with music, either. The whole thing makes as much sense as Paula wanting to be a daytime talk show host.
Also, I can’t see her being less expensive than Paula. Hasn’t her daytime show been at least sort of successful?
Yes, Hollywood is rife with amoral human scum, but they could at least have selected someone un-afflicted by the mental illness that is homosexuality. (It was indeed formally classified by the medical establishment as a mental illness until about a generation ago.)
The Mrs. and I were, at times, loyal viewers of the mindless but fun American Idol show. We are now--adamantly--former viewers.
I am gone also. Miss Paula
As a non-viewer of AI, this is a surprisingly smart move by the Idol producers. People LIKE Ellen. Her talk show surpassed Oprah last year. She will stand in for the viewers on the panel, an Everybody type.
>>>Great! We get to watch a queer judge that will judge over queer contestants.
So I gather that never bothered you before from Cowell and Seacrest? Or do you simply find gay men more to your liking ?
>>>Ellen Degenerate onboard!!! My prayers have been answered. Mrs. Jazzy says Buh-bye to American Idol!!!
I wish that was so. The appeal of this show has always been bear-baiting. Cruelty to the exhibitionists who put themselves forward, and are really bad. Actually Ellen will probably tone that part down. Still I wish all these type shows would just go away. But really, “Ellen Degenerate”? Grade school playground name calling is so lame from adults.
That does it for me; no more Idol ...
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually Ellen will probably tone that part down.Oh brother; she'll do so by defining bad singing 'up' (the BAD deserve to hear the truth, and honestly put IMNSHO!)
2nd reason not to watch.
She will stand in for the viewers on the panel, an Everybody type.Great; more sameness, without distinction; blah ... America/Americans actually appreciate 'trvth', or haven't you noticed?
Sorry to offend your delicate sensibilities poor little tlb-sey, but “Degenerate” describes her sexual proclivities perfectly.
That’s it for me. I won’t watch.
But I may peek in on jonny’s thread, unless he quits, too.
I know :-|
This doesn't make any sense. I thought they were forcing Paula out so what's her name could take her place?
So the show will still be top-heavy with judges (last season proved that 4 doesn't work) and they've replaced Paula with someone who is TWICE as annoying, and who has absolutely no connection to the music industry?
Paula needs to fire her agent.
She won’t make me quit :) It might be a little harder to watch, LOL, but the show is just background noise to me anyway. I like the thread and the fun with we have with friends more than anything else.
I KNOW!!!!!
Maybe. The article makes it sound like Degeneres was a last minute choice--and that none of the other people they tried were working out.
Are they going to pay her the same $15 million they offered Paula?
Something's queer here and it's not just Ellen ;)
You will put hurl-alert on your pings from now on, right?
What about Olivia Newton John?
part of the show was the SHOW she put on when she appeared........what a hoot she was. ellen won’t be quite the same, although the younger set seems to like her.
I would have thought they could have gotten rosieO cheaper than ellen
>>>Sorry to offend your delicate sensibilities poor little tlb-sey,
No need to apologize jassy-sey. As I’m not Ellen I wasn’t offended. I was simply embarrassed for you on your display of churlishness and childishness. Mispronouncing somebody’s name doesn’t call for wit, cleverness, or intelligence. As we don’t choose our family names this sort of thing is just the cheapest of cheap shots. But I guess it’s the best some can do.
Carry on.
The End.
Hi Jonny-thanks for the ping. I don’t mind Ellen as a rule but what are the PTB thinking? She isn’t in the music industry! I guess she’s hired to be the nice judge. Ellen did a 1 night guest judging stint on So You Think You Can Dance? this summer and she loved all the dances and didn’t critisize anything...I see her doing the same on AI.
Oh I guess you did see this. LOL Yeah, I don’t get it. She doesn’t seem like the type who would be willing to share the spotlight and, let’s be honest, Simon is the star of that show.
NO WAY!
Hey! Where’s the sarcasm tag? It’s got to be around here somewhere....looking, looking, looking. NOpe haven’t found it yet.
When I saw Ellen on the dancing show, she was horrible and added absolutely nothing but obnoxious drivel. There's just no credibility and I like to think that the judges on these types of shows have something to back up what they're saying.
Very disappointing...
I just read the article! Shocking. I do like Ellen’s comedy. Her younger HBO stage shows are hysterical.
Ellen is funny, but this makes no sense as she has never been in the music industry. It would make more sense to find someone who has a history in the music industry either as a producer or a singer. I will miss Paula. I know she rambled sometimes, but that’s what made it entertaining.
Say what?
Ugh.
