South African police will have a shoot to kill policy at next summer’s World Cup in a bid to cut gun crime.

The war on weapons is called Operation Wanya Tsotsi, which translates as: “You will soil your pants, criminal.”

Deputy minister of police Fikile Mbalula warned armed criminals that officers were entitled to open fire at them.

He said: “If you are a criminal and you are gun-toting, our message to law enforcement officers is clear – shoot to kill.”

“We say we are going toe to toe, tooth for tooth, nail for nail with the criminals. Street by street, corner to corner, we will find you.”

Mr Mbalula warned a dinner of the ruling African National Congress party in Johannesburg that those who use illegal weapons would lose their normal rights as citizens.

Interesting approach. Not sure about that mission name though. Maybe it doesn't translate well.

They should have done this with the Raiders while they were in L.A.

Now that the criminals have been warned, THEY will make sure to shoot first to kill.

What wet-brain came up with the idea to have S.A. host an international sporting meet these days anyway? (OK, OK, I know, the utterly corrupt FIFA...)

It seems like soccer events are always ripe for hooliganism, rioting, etc., so I’m not sure that the police announcing up front that it’s going to shoot to kill will help. And really don’t the police always shoot to kill? Shooting just to wing someone is for the movies I think.
