Belgian Kim Clijsters has completed a remarkable comeback to tennis by winning the US Open.

Clijsters – who defeated American Serena Williams in controversial circumstances in the semi-finals – prevailed over Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki 7-5 6-3 in the final.

She is the first mother to win a grand slam title since Australian Evonne Goolagong in 1980, the victory coming just five weeks after she returned to the sport following a 27-month retirement.

Clijsters is also the first wildcard, man or woman, to win a US Open title in the history of the tournament.

Call me parochial but I like to see Americans win the U.S. Open.
