Knowing Maryland as I do, I doubt the police will look upon this with favor. He may find himself in trouble unless he can demonstrate that he was in fear of his life AND had no way to escape.
That whole “way of escape” concept is a criminals right to rob and then SUE if they are injured. Complete bull crap.
