I wish I had the trained skills of using a Katana, I have researched buying a modern day steel type for cutting but carrying one is impractical in the US for defensive purposes.

A clip knife that can be opened with one hand is a great defensive weapon. If you carry a gun, carry the knife in your off pocket (the one opposite your gun) in case someone tries to get your gun out of the holster, all you have to do is jam the gun down to prevent them form getting it and then get your knife out and show them what their intestines look like.
Cold Steel manufacturs a number of tomahawks, and there are ample courses, videos, and books out there on their employment as a defensive weapon. They can be fearsome in the hands of someone who knows how to weild them, and the rest of the time, pack away neatly as "camping equipment."
No one will ever force me to abandon my guns, and I think I speak for many others also. To disarm me is to tell me I am helpless to defend myself. In other words it is attempted murder. I have the right to defend myself from such laws.
I’ve practiced a little w/ sword work during my MA days. It’s much harder than firing a gun and probably why the samurai got all bent out of shape at the idea of peasant armies training w/ guns.
