Allergies are on the rise and there are a number of theories why. Some speculate that it's due to more parents getting kids tested for allergies; allergists will find allergies thta 40 years ago would have been dismissed as inconveniences. Other speculation is that over-hyped concern about sterility regarding babies has weakened their immune system.
A study conducted in 2008 by the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg says diet may be the culprit.
In Västra Götaland County in western Sweden, half of all teenagers are considered affected by asthma, nasal symptoms and eczema, almost 10 percentage points higher than when a similar study was conducted in 2000.
Who is least affected? Those who eat more fish and butter.

Back in the day, we had fish at school every Friday. Now that schools don’t allow Christian beliefs, our children are getting sick. It all connects.
I had fish every Friday at school also, but I attended Catholic school. Not all Christian denominations eschewed fish on Friday. Although I am now Episcopalian, I still do not eat meat on Fridays during Lent, nor do my husband and daughter who were never Catholic. Even in my daughter's public school there is always a non meat choice in the cafeteria on Fridays.
All the different public schools I attended served only fish on Fridays. There was no question. You didn’t want it, you starved. That’s just the way it was.

I’ll give you the epitome of irresponsible parents.....the Legion is having it’s annual picnic on Saturday (first we have to cook crab cakes for the monthly dinner tomorrow night, but that’s another story) and our 11 year old is not competing in just 1 horseshoe competition, but 2. She’s teaming up with daddy in one of them.
I can hear the cries of the nannies now -— but, but that SOOOOOOOO dangerous. HAH, they’ve never seen my daughter throw shoes. She’s good, real good.
Good for you. I believe that kids will eat anything you want them to eat, as long as a) parents will also eat it; b) they don't get filled with junk food otherwise; c) you're willing to cook for them.
Being a grandma, I think I can attest that "c" appears to be the deal-breaker nowadays.
And yes, moderate amounts of butter can't help but be better than a spray.

That's certainly part of it. Tests these days are so much more sensitive than they used to be that you can't necessarily interpret a reaction as a problem anymore. Neither can you dismiss it. Allergy medicine is an art.
I’m still mad that they took ‘Jarts’ (lawn darts) off the market. Now THERE was a game! Sis and I used to wing them OVER THE HOUSE at one another, LOL!

I know Rowling is, but I did the tag line after seeing a bumper sticker that said “Republicans for Voldemort.” It was on a car with NJ tags and the people that brought it to my attention figured it must be some candidate in NJ (we’re in VA.) I later told the owner how offensive it was and her attitude was “It is supposed to be.” She has the same attitude about my bumper stickers and so we agreed to not discuss politics.
Other than that we actually both like each other very much..........

I have no idea if it is because of anything, I just know that in at least 2 public schools around here there is a non meat choice every Friday.
Of course where I live there are often fish choices on other days as well. We’re surrounded by water and many of the parents of the kids in the schools are commercial fishermen. It’s very plentiful. The watermen’s kids generally will opt for anything BUT fish or seafood.

You're right. Although I will add a caveat here, my 11yo will eat things I won't eat, but her father eats, such as broccoli, brussel sprouts, and bluefish. The only thing she is finicky about is tomatoes. She's picky about what kind she will eat raw, but adores any thing that contains cooked tomatoes.

Fake popcorn butter actually causes a disease in people who work in the popcorn factories, oddly enough. Just checked- it was 8 people in 8 years... They are not doing away with it.
Dad's food preferences are an important element. If he's off eating Chips Ahoy and Pringles, the kids aren't going to be satisfied with brussel sprouts. I had the same experience -- my kids would eat things Dad loved, but that I could barely stomach. I pretended as best I could.
The only thing she is finicky about is tomatoes. She's picky about what kind she will eat raw, but adores any thing that contains cooked tomatoes.
Funny story -- my Mom and I took my eldest, the one with allergies, to the farm store one day, and I took my eye off of him, in a stroller, for a few minutes or so, only to find him munching happily on a raw onion he had grabbed. Raw, cooked -- as long as they eat it. LOL!
My oldest had allergies. As an infant, he needed soy milk. While we were working out that problem he broke out in horrible eczema all over his face (also the height of wintertime in Southern Maine). He remained sensitive to milk for another 4-5 years, too much would make him wheeze and he was eventually diagnosed with asthma, which troubled him seasonally. But he only had eczema that one winter.
In looking into all of that (which would have been a dozen or so years ago), many people mentioned that asthma, eczema and milk problems seemed to be associated.
I suspect that this was right at the beginning of the rise in allergies in children. It would seem to me that people who tend to be allergic to one thing may have a higher likelihood of being allergic to something else. Perhaps they were making too direct connections between various allergens?
Hilarious. Mine is the same way with garlic. I use a lot of garlic in my cooking, and so have ever form of it in the house all the time. She is notorious for grabbing the jar of chopped garlic and scooping out a spoonful and eating it. As much as I love garlic even I don't do that. But as you said, as long as they eat it.
I have no idea. Other than breaking out in a rash because of fabric softener, and the daggone eczema, I never had any allergies. Then I moved to Delaware. I learned real fast what seasonal allergies were/are. 27 years later and I still know.
I’ve got excema, allergies and slight asthma. I definitely see an uptick in flare ups when I eat more dairy. I’m allergic to milk, but do eat limited cheese, ice cream etc.
I treat it as a self-controllable inconvenience.
