From a review of the book;
The book also suffers from a glut of issues, most of them relating to one type of abusive or self-destructive behavior or another. I’m completely okay with books portraying teens in realistic ways; it’s true that alcohol, drug use, and sex are a part of their experiences. But every single issue—teen pregnancy and abortion, physical abuse, rape and other forms of sexual assault, drinking/driving, gay bashing, sexual experimentation, suicide, the use of various drugs, infidelity, accidental death, pedophilia—every one plays a part in the plot, and to what end? I’m not looking for a moral or a lesson, but to me it seemed like the abuse was only there to give characterization or to justify the characters’ reactions or behaviors. But in the end, Charlie’s revelation seemed to say that you can’t blame those abuses for who you are.
can they have this teacher arrested for providing pornographic materials to minors?
I read some of the reviews on Amazon, and this sounds more like “Catcher in the Rye” for the MTV generation, only not as well written. Maybe a crappy book, but not something to go nuts about, imho.
Is it a book for “the ages” or will it be another flash in the pan trash novel?
Why not teach the classics?
While reading books that confront complicated issues, can help a young adult come to understand things better, this book does seem a little over the top. I like the Bible, another book which deals with some of the same issues but in a different way. Perhaps this radical teacher could have the kids read a little of that book, the Bible, which I am sure is banned from most public schools reading list. Fortunately for the kids, if they are well raised, reading something will not destroy their moral compass.
I don’t understand your founders reference. Are you me suggesting that they are they rolling in their graves because of this act of censorship or because of some moral decay?
I’ve read the ‘Wallflower’ novel and it is a tragic reflection on what is probably reality for some teens. It is a crystal-meth vision of what happens without basic morality. That said, there are many, many, many, many better books. The kids don’t need another primer on how to live a hopeless and depraved life. If mom & dad (where’s dad?!) want this in the home, more power to them. But classroom education should be edifying, not stupifying.
