When I was in Australia, I was quite surprised at the number of people beaten to death every day. Cricket bats, golf clubs, chairs, whatever. Turns out they have very strict gun control down under, so shooting deaths are rather rare.

But people kill people. Sad, but true. As you point out, taking away one tool is not a real solution. There are plenty of other tools that come to hand.
