More Connecticut businesses shut down during the third quarter than in any third quarter since 2000, the year the Secretary of the State's office began compiling data on business closings.

A total of 2,601 Connecticut businesses shut their doors during the quarter that ended Sept. 30, according to figures released Wednesday by Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz. That represents a 7 percent increase from the 2,432 businesses that closed during the third quarter of 2008 and an 11 percent increase from the 2,339 businesses that shut down during the third quarter of 2007.

The number of business closings recorded in the third quarter brings the total for 2009 to 9,545, also a record for the first nine months of the year. The closings through the first nine months of 2009 is 14 percent higher than the 8,363 figure recorded through the end of September 2008, and 27 percent greater than the 7,513 closings recorded through the first nine months of 2007.

Conversely, 6,624 new businesses incorporated during the third quarter, a 2 percent increase from the 6,468 new business starts recorded in the third quarter of 2008, but a 9 percent decrease from the 7,310 business starts recorded in the third quarter of 2007.

Overall, Connecticut has seen 20,494 new business starts over the first nine months of 2009, a 6 percent decrease from the 2008 figure of 21,685.

Well, here in Georgia, I’m seeing more & more storefronts emptying out, which is no surprise given the economic conditions and the hostility toward business ( and America, and Americans ) flooding out of DC...

What really shocked me was driving by an older, two-story building that’s been around forever and had a wide variety of businesses in it. Last one was a grocery big on peddling Lotto and ATM service...

Gone.

Razed below the slab, just dirt left.
