Thursday Pond Shots

The little pond will be bone dry soon, I'll have to find another place to watch birds for a while. A good heavy rain would be a big help.

The birds are starting to head south from here. The swans and geese don’t go far. I think the herons just fo upriver to find open water. The big flocks of starlings are strting to gather now too.

How many images do you typically take to get 5 great images like that?

"The big flocks of starlings are strting to gather now too."

When we lived on the farm, a flock of starlings arrived. I got my video camera, and taped until my battery went dead, over ten minutes, (old video camera) and they were still flying by. I never saw anything like it in my life. Amazing!

Probably 15 or 20. Feathers are tricky, it’s a good idea to shoot exposure brackets and pick the best shots. The Little Blue Herons want to underexpose and the white birds are the opposite. That’s what makes it interesting!

That’s the nice thing about digital. It makes photography so much more affordable. (aside from the cost of camera and equipment)

Absolutely lovely SWAMPSNIPER. Thank you once again.

Annually the Rockin’ QS Ranch becomes the Summer home to the migration of Hooded Orioles from the Yucatan. They arrive anytime from the end of February through mid April and stay with us until the latter part of September.

The boys always precede the girls about two weeks in arrival, and the boys leave for the Yucatan about two weeks prior to the girls, and the young ‘uns departure. There are always five or six young females and their late hatchlings that stay on for a little longer preparing for their journey.

I hope to someday spend the time to figure out how to post pictures of them to the internet to share with you and everyone else.

I live in the sticks but I do like going to Hidden Lake Gardens not far from home. Its run by MSU and actually is a pretty nice place to spend an afternoon and $3. I’ve gotten to where I walk most of it but you can drive a good bit of it.

It wasn’t a great day for photography when I went but I’m pretty pleased with some of the photos I got.
