I’ve long thought that UFO could be redone, and I gather Paramount is planning to do so right now.
However, more than the plot lines, which were fairly ordinary, the series was “mod stylish”. This made the show, as much as anything else. It is ironic that even in 1970, that show was more stylistically futuristic than what we see in today’s styles.
It was low budget attention to detail. As with its American contemporary, Star Trek, which was known for its unique sound effects and timelessly futuristic stylishness and costumes.
UFO was memorable for things like DeLorean style automobiles, vertical Ericofon telephones, Nehru jackets, Beatle boots, hair styles, silver miniskirts and purple wigs, and sonic guns. Not just for the beautiful people, but for everyone.
But don’t forget things like architecture, Googie and Space Age design, everything from lava lamps, ball chairs, home sculpture and fountains, acute angles, textured concrete, etc. Things people dreamed of and wanted, but can only now afford, and only now are they made with quality. Flat screen televisions behind remote control panel doors, cellphones, design lighting and all the other technological innovations they didn’t yet have.
Today we have the technology and quality, but we no longer have the style. We need design like that, but not for cheap things like gas stations and fast food joints. Unfortunately design today is utilitarian and industrial-bland.
But that could change with a show like UFO. A show that people could look at and say, I want things like that, style like that. I want to live in a place that looks futuristic.
“I want things like that, style like that. I want to live in a place that looks futuristic.”
Things like Colonel Lake! Great show. If they had a little bigger budget it would have been awesome.
