The Gleevec will help him for a while. He will either have to have chemo or go to some new drug. My Dad had CML and the drug will stop working. Prayer for Kareem. I would not wish this on anyone.

"You have a very good chance to live your life out and not have to make any drastic changes to your lifestyle." Unfortunately, you fall outside the "Complete-Lives" curve and so you'll have to take this pain pill until you die.
Unless, of course, you are able to offer some remuneration in the right places...

I can’t help reading a headline like this and thinking, “Why couldn’t it have been OJ?”, or Micheal Vick, or fill in the blank.

People remember his somewhat lower profile as an older member of the great Laker teams of the 80s, but his first five years with the Bucks compares well to any period from anybody who has ever played the game for pure dominance.
Young Kareem versus Old Wilt:

I didn't know Kareem Abdul Jabbar played basketball. I just knew him as the guy that fought with Lee in that Karate movie. He was good at karate too. Lew Alcindor was really good at basketball and played for UCLA.

Get well, Kareem.

Wilt was the only player in basketball who could block Kareem’s sky hook.
Either player would make Shaq look like an amateur.

I agree. To me, the decline in basketball is illustrated by the fact that many of the stars of the 80's like Barkley, Stockton and Karl Malone remained productive almost to the verge of middle age against the younger players of the late 90s.

The Cap is one of the greatest players to ever play the game. I am praying for his full recovery.

Surely you can’t be serious.

Here’s one way to look at it: Imagine if Wilt, Kareem, and Shaq each were 6’-8” tall. What would their careers have been like?
Wilt would have been a dominant, athletic, defensive forward.
Kareem would have been a dominant, agile, high-scoring forward.
Shaq would be changing tires at Sam’s Club.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen that over the years. Our family developed a tradition of watching it on Christmas Eve. Don’t know how it started, but it did. Saw it the first time in the Embassy theater in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, sometime in around 1981.

I was in the airport once, and the bag handler guy said that quote to the guy next to him. Without thinking, I blurted out, “I am serious, and don’t call me Shirley.” He couldn’t believe I knew the line. My girlfriend asked what the hell that was about and I just laughed.
