Obama to Speak From West Point Tuesday on Afghanistan
NY Times ^ | 11/26/09 | By HELENE COOPER and ERIC SCHMITT

President Obama said Tuesday that he was determined to “finish the job” in Afghanistan, and his aides signaled to allies that he would send as many as 25,000 to 30,000 additional American troops there even as they cautioned that the final number remained in flux.

Obama had completed his consultations with his war council and would formally announce his decision in a national address at 8 p.m. Tuesday from the United States Military Academy at West Point.

...

“After eight years — some of those years in which we did not have, I think, either the resources or the strategy to get the job done — it is my intention to finish the job,” he said.

He said that he would outline his Afghanistan strategy after Thanksgiving, adding, “I feel very confident that when the American people hear a clear rationale for what we’re doing there and how we intend to achieve our goals, that they will be supportive.”

Though he and his advisers have drawn up benchmarks to measure progress and put pressure on the Afghan government to do its part, Mr. Obama offered no details in his public remarks on Tuesday. He was also silent on precisely what would constitute finishing the job in Afghanistan or how soon he envisioned being able to begin extricating the United States from the war there.

While the troop levels he orders will go a long way toward defining his position, the White House has stressed that Mr. Obama’s review has gone far beyond the numbers to better define the military and civilian-aid components of the effort in Afghanistan, how they fit into efforts to combat Al Qaeda in Pakistan and how to ensure that the American commitment in the region is not open-ended.

Oh I get it...he,as usual, waited for another PHOTO OP, while American soldiers died from his waffling. I truly hate this sack of sh*t.

I never thought I’d feel worse than when the Xlinton’s were walking the grounds there - I was wrong.

Obama can’t do anything with a pre-announcement press conference, a photo-op, props, a setting, and a florid speech (usually talking about how special he is). All this after it took him 1 year to make a decision.

What an @ss.

Maybe he’ll try to sell The Point. Benedict Arnold did it.

The a**hole is STILL blaming Bush to deflect his own incompetence.

I have this creepy feeling that he’s going to scold the American people for something - like spending irresponsibly - and try to make us feel like we deserve to be punished with a huge new tax.

I am pleased with his decision to finish the job in Afghanistan.

I know this is going to get a lot of ugly responses, but it’s true. I am pleased with his decision, no matter how late. I am not pleased that it took him this long, but I am pleased with the decision.

Yeah, he's a real model of decisiveness and competence. /sarc

You might get a thrill running up and down your leg because the Holy O finally found time between golf games to make a decision, but I just want to see the self-righteous, self-worshipping, America-hating, neo-Marxist jackass retired from the presidency and onto the golf courses full-time at earliest opportunity.

In the meantime I'm praying he doesn't utterly destroy our military forces.

I agree that he sucks, but this is a good decision. I guess I am like George Washington, and I can’t tell a lie. :D

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, and may you always have something to be thankful for.

Don’t go giving him too much credit; I doubt the Dumbass in Chief’s motives are not really what you think:

He’s gotta do SOMETHING to keep as many service people on foreign soil as long as possible...if they were her at home, more of them might join Oath Keepers.

I'm sure the C in C will be treated with respect but not with a lot of enthusiasm. The cadets are smarter than the people in his administration ...plus, actually love their country!

Bill Clinton was not popular with West Point cadets and I'm sure Obama is even more unpopular.

Why West Point? Why didn't he go to Berkley?

Agreed.

How did Hussein put it?

“You guys[our men in unifomred aservice] make a great photo-op”

An even more shameful CIC than Clinton.
