It is clear from the e-mails alone that these global warming zealots were “fixing” any data that did not support their foregone conclusion of global warming and deleting or dismissing any data that did not support their hypothesis. Ironically Gore was right in stating that a consensus of scientists supported man caused global warming; he just failed to say it was only a consensus of this cabal.

Scientists who are outside of an area of specialty tend to believe the scientists who are the recognized specialists in that area. It's natural to trust your "colleagues", since they are expected to extend the same professional courtesy to you when it is your specialty that is being discussed.

It's like a fraternity, with PhD in some field of science being the secret handshake.

So, if you want to corner the market in some technical area, you just need to stack the deck with like-minded people in all of the key positions at the major universities. When the subject is a socialist hot-button, and 95% of the professors in major universities are socialists, it's not hard to make this happen.

Then the whole scientific community starts parroting what this group of politically-motivated scientists is saying. After all, we must defer to the specialists in the area.
