A new franchise fee exacted on hospitals is to generate $718 million be used by the OHIO government cut the state budget deficit.

This move is made at a time when the state’s hospitals are cutting staff in order to keep the hospitals out of the red ink.

Small rural hospitals have already cut their staff by as much as 15%.

State lawmakers justify this move by saying the hospitals will be partially reimbursed with higher Medicaid payments.

Some already weakened rural hospitals may be forced to close as the nation’s economic crisis lingers on.

“it just can’t get any worse”

I would never say that.

Our Liberal Democrat Governor could never imagine cutting government services or laying off state employees to close the gap between income and expenses.

No a much better idea is to raise taxes on private businesses that must then lay off their employees.

Oh, and it would never occur to our Governor that when private businesses lay off employees that it has the effect of cutting government tax rolls because unemployed workers do not pay taxes and it raises state expenses because laid off workers apply of unemployment insurance benefits.

Nope would never happen.
