Bryant Gumbel Has Lung Cancer

Bryant Gumbel is being treated for lung cancer, the former Former Today show anchor revealed on Live! With Regis & Kelly Tuesday morning.

The sportscaster and TV host, 61, said that he had surgery last month to remove a malignant tumor in his chest, a revelation prompted when Kelly Ripa asked Gumbel, subbing for Regis Philbin, to dance – and he begged off. According to Gumbel, part of his lung was removed, and he will be seeing his surgeon next week.

"We had told a few people, we told my family, obviously. I even kept it from my staff at Real Sports. So I'm okay for the time being," he said. "I'm hoping they greenlight me to play golf again."

Sorry to hear that, even if I'm not a big fan of Bryant Gumbel.

Every time I see Bryant Gumbel, I think of a radio interview that I heard with a long-time friend of his brother Greg. After raving about what a nice guy Greg was, the friend (whose name I don't remember) was asked if he knew Bryant. After the interviewee said yes, he was asked what he thought of Bryant. After a long pause, he replied, "Um...Bryant is Greg's brother." Spoke volumes and the interviewer got the message and moved on.

I wish Bryant Gumbel all the very best. I hope he is free and clear of this horrible disease and that he will live a long and happy, healthy life with his family.

Bryant...I am praying for you. I was never a fan. However, that is separate. I am now praying for you as a human being and hope you will be fine for the rest of your life. Our blessings to you.

Thank you. I just think when things happen like this that we have to put aside everything else and do the right thing. Perhaps Bryant will reconsider things on his side as well.

News anchors too...Peter Jennings, Harry Reasoner, I suppose you could count Sam Donaldson...John Chancellor died young, not sure if it was cancer.

Bryant Gumbel, This Is Your Sorry Life!

When questioning Dr. Richard Corlin of the American Medical Association during a Today Show interview, Gumbel said, "In the greedy excesses of the Reagan years, the mean income of the average physician nearly doubled, from $88,000 to $170,000. Was that warranted?"

Yet during the Reagan year of 1982, Gumbel signed a contract with the Today Show paying him $750,000 a year. In 1985 -- still a Reagan year -- his salary was raised to $1.5 million a year. Now that is economic disparity. I know that being the host of a morning "news" show is more important (sarc.) than being a physician, but tell me Bryant, was that pay raise warranted?

Now that his health is failing from lung cancer, I wonder if this putz still feels that physicians are overpaid? I wish Gumbel well, but he's still a putz in my book."
