Did anyone see a meteor(ite) come through the atmosphere about 5 minutes ago?

Probably got excoriated for a lack of foreplay.

There have been a lot of big bolide sightings during 2008-2009. Partly that's a consequence of more people living in darker spaces; partly that could even be due to more awareness of stuff in the sky because of 9/11 (I've found myself doing more skygazing these past eight years); it probably is just one of those things, there happen to be plenty of larger chunks arriving after eons of travel through the inner Solar system; could be a wave of debris from outside the Solar system:

I referred to what you call in your comment a shooting star, the common ones. There are others, not common at all, referred to generally as "fire balls", and they look/sound just like what you describe. Ie. Big bright and silent. I have only seen one and it startled me even though I knew what it was.

Exactly! That was actually the -second- one I have seen in my lifetime. As I wrote in my original post, I saw one in 1992 from Pittsbugh, PA. I was working my way through school, delivering a pizza and as I just got out of the car and was walking up to a house on a hill, I was looking in the right direction at the right time and I saw this big fireball dropping from the sky and it looked like it had hit maybe 5-10 miles away.

It was before the Internet days and I told people about it, even called the police to see if anyone else had reported anything. I heard nothing.

Only a couple of years ago I was watching one of those History Channel, meteor shows where they talk about near misses and contemplate the “what if a giant meteor crashes into the Earth” scenarios. During that show they spoke about that very meteor I saw in PA 15 or so years later and they had a video of it!

After I watched your video link, I decided to search Youtube for the meteor I saw in PA with the words “meteor 1992” and there were several videos of it to my surprise. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDUzeObuocw

You have to love the Internet. Nevertheless, what I saw on Wednesday night was the same thing. The thing is, with cameras mounted everywhere, you KNOW the one I saw penetrate the atmosphere and make impact Wednesday night was caught on MANY cameras; however, most people would miss it because the owners of these surveilence cameras wouldn’t be looking for it.

It would be nice if the word were to spread and people who have cameras facing the east, the direction I was facing when I witnessed it, were to check roughly between 9:20PM eastern - 9:30PM eastern to see if they captured it. Subsequently, I’m in south-east Florida. I’m sure it probably landed in the ocean, considering I was facing east and am only about 7 miles west of the Atlantic. That’s one of the things that gave me adrenaline because it looked so large and I was wondering what size wave it would make.

Here’s an even better shot of the same 1992 crashing meteor with the downtown Pittsburgh skyline. I can tell they were shooting this from Mount Washington as that is where all tourists and residents go with their cameras as it presents a spectacular view overlooking the city.
