No world leader has ever surpassed the accomplishments of former South African President Nelson Mandela.
So says actor Matt Damon, who plays rugby team captain Francois Pienaar in Clint Eastwood's Nelson Mandela film, "Invictus," which opens nationwide Friday.
Mandela convinced everybody to not go to war. That involves a lot of personal responsibility," Damon told Tarts at last weeks Los Angeles premiere. "South Africa had the greatest political leader in the world in our lifetime. Period.
The film covers the months in 1995 after Nelson Mandela was elected president of South Africa after decades of white apartheid rule, a time during which the country was close to devolving into civil war.
Damon says that Mandela couldn't save his country alone, though.
There was responsibility taken by the citizens as well, thats a lesson for the rest of the world about how to handle conflict.

At any rate, Mandela was little more than an easily manipulated puppet on the strings of Joe Slovo and the Soviet KGB, and was imprisoned for so long for his part in the murder of a Police Officer did he (Nelson buried the gun in his own yard - real bright, huh...)?
Oh well, I guess actual details don't matter to a radical Boston “Southie” psuedo-labor stooge in Hollyweird who owes his career to his associations with the Affleck brothers. What an idiot.
Eastwood, however, should know better.
Matt Damon is just stupidly liberal line he learned as a youth in the late 80’s and early 90’s.
If anything, F.W. De Klerk is at least equal to Mandela. He had the reigns of power, but peacefully gave-up power, and the Afrikaaners culture, to the ANC. Many in his National Party were quite willing to carry on with Apartheid.
The most important point - De Klerk could only move when he did, because Communism and the Soviet Union had just collapsed. The ANC was a Marxist movement, and with the Soviet Union and Cuba fomenting bloody revolt and revolution throughout Africa, no responsible politician could begin to work for a transfer of power while the ANC was directly supported by the Soviet Union. White South Africans saw what happened in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe with Robert Mugabe and his thugs. As such, the ANC and their radicalism share the blame equally for keeping apartheid in place.
What a bold move! I wonder if it will have a negative impact on his career as an actor? /s
Mandela convinced everybody to not go to war. That involves a lot of personal responsibility,”
That is pure BS. Mandela was offered his freedom many times in the years leading up to his eventual release on condition he swears off violence. He refused every time. He also did not become the leader of the ANC until after his release, up to then he was the leader of the ANC’s armed wing which carried out many attacks on civilians.
In the time leading up to his release, and ever since, the ANC has waged war against those Zulus who stand against them, and many thousands have died in that war.
“”””please justify??”””””
Matt Dammon is a Hollywood idiot. There you go.
Mandela was in prison because he had government building schematics in his possession. He had plans to bomb those buildings.
Quite the hero, eh?
This is not necessarily to defend Mandela but many of Israeli’s early political leaders bombed/attacked British targets during the Mandate. One of those involved in acts of terrorism was Rahm Emmanuael’s dad.
When the British headquarters hotel was bombed, there was a warning before hand........if I am not mistaken.

She got pregnant. Entirely an accident I am sure. *smirk*
“believe that South Africa will follow the Zimbabwe model shortly after Mandelas death”
Actually I heard that basically all the whites will be fair game after his death. Systematic.
Without Mandella, they might still be under Apartheid. Under Apartheid, SA was actually doing pretty well. They had some civil rights issues, but . . .
Mandela took the most prosperous country in Africa and turned it into a 3rd world hell-hole that makes Detroit look good by comparison.
The transition from ANC Communist and terrorist to World statesman is complete and he can join that happy group of frauds that include Yasir Arafat, Ceasar Chavez and Che Guevara.
bttt
I was reading last summer that there's quite a bit of intolerance to the refugees (perhaps they're Zulu, I'm not sure), amongst the indigenous SA tribal people. It frequently turns very violent in some of these refugee areas.
Hardly the model of inclusiveness that Mandela allegedly advocates.
He’ll say the same thing of Ahmedinejad after making a movie about him, then of Chavez after making a movie about him, and so on.
