Tiger Woods’ Wife Elin 'Wants Half His Fortune' as She Prepares to Meet Divorce Lawyers
The Daily Mirror (UK) ^ | 12/16/09 | Ryan Parry

Tiger Woods’ devastated wife has called in California’s top celebrity divorce lawyer, say her friends.

And Elin Nordegren – rocked by her husband’s string of alleged affairs – could get half the £337.5million he has earned in the five years they have been married.

The 29-year-old Swedish model, seen out in Florida yesterday minus her wedding ring, is believed to be meeting celebrity lawyer Sorrell Trope next week.

Trope, 82, a partner in Californian law firm Trope and Trope, has represented big-name stars including Cary Grant, Nicole Kidman, Nicolas Cage and Britney Spears in a 60-year career.

And in another blow to Woods, Elin is believed to be planning to file for divorce in California – where the couple have a home – and not Florida, where they live.

Under California law the “no-fault divorce”, introduced in 1970, means there is an equal division of assets and property.

This could mean that any pre-nup agreement Elin signed with the golf star will be torn up.

A source said: “Mr Trope is the best divorce lawyer in the business and the divorce laws in California are much more favourable than most other states.

“Elin can fight for half of what her husband has earned since they were married. And Trope can bust through any pre-nup – he’s done it many times before.”

Last night, when asked if he was representing Woods’ wife as her divorce lawyer, Trope replied: “Not right now.”

Friends say Elin will spend Christmas in Orlando with the couple’s children, daughter Sam Alexis, two, and son Charlie Axel, 10 months, before filing for divorce in the New Year.

Elin is endanger from going from a very sympathetic figure to being a gold digger. This is a terrible PR move.

Why would Elin care more about PR than, say, $300 million?

Does the lawyer get 40% of Elin’s part or does Tiger have to foot the bill?

Why can’t this just be about the heart of a young woman and mother who had dreams of a future with the guy she loved? I might add that loving someone is the whole package, so what if part of that love was about what prestige, money and power Tiger might have had, he offered it, she took it. Now she is has to salvage her life, raise her damaged children as privately as she can, knowing full well she now lives in a fishbowl. She deserves every cent she gets from Tiger.

"Actual physical presence in the state for X number of days/weeks/months? Owning a domicile in the state? Paying taxes in the state?"

Yes, all the above. Again, each state sets their own residency requirements and criteria, but that criteria frequently includes all the items you've outlined - must own or lease property, must pay taxes (or have a tax liability) and be physically present in the state for XXX number of days out of a full calendar year.

Yesterday, Woods faced further embarrassment over a TV interview recorded on November 17 and originally scheduled to be broadcast on Christmas Day. Speaking on the Sky Network in New Zealand, Woods said his family has “been the best thing that ever happened” to him. The 33-year-old was then asked: “Family first and golf second – always be like that?” Woods answered: “Always.”

Got to admit seeing the wife and kids at the tournaments had me fooled

To globally humiliate the woman like that? She deserves 60% and I am a man. She appears to have been totally innocent and a good wife.

He is a serial adulterer, serial purchaser of the services of prostitutes and possibly a steroid user. It he is a juicer then he is also a cheater. He created this nightmare.

Everybody in this tragedy will end up crying all the way to the bank, including the shysters and the publishers of tabloid rags.

She deserves child support. She doesn't deserve HIS hard earned money!

WD, you usually have a great opinion on things like this. What say you?

Hate to break it to you, but his money was mostly earned in advertising. The value of his name was increased by his “wholesome, family image” that he cultivated by marrying and having children.

The endorsement revenue is primarily a byproduct of his position as the dominant golf player on the tour.

If Tiger had been single and catting around like George Clooney, Nike, Gillette, Accenture and nearly all the other advertisers would have used him nonetheless.

He has hurt himself by falsely portraying himself publicly as a "family man," but the family man image is not the principal reason he has been chosen for endorsements.

I agree his value was increased by his family man image, but only slightly. I think you underestimate the degeneracy of the popular culture. Even after the revelations, the most recent public opinion polls show him viewed favorably by a majority of golf fans and a majority of people polled do not think he should lose his endorsements.

If the news reports are true, Tiger engaged in unprotected sex with multiple women including prostitutes. Assuming he was also engaging in unprotected sex with his wife, he was exposing her to any STD’s these women carried. Such diseases can have have serious implications including death. She apparently trusted him to preserve and protect the sanctity of their marriage which includes protecting his wife and children from harm.

If I was not married and was offered the opportunity to engage in unprotected sex with one of Tiger’s women for half of his wealth, I would not take the risk. I therefore do not see half of his wealth as an unreasonable penalty for exposing her to dangerous diseases and violating her trust that he would live by his wedding vows.

If one of the parents is extremly irresponsible, the more responsible parent should have custody of the children and be in complete control over any contact between the children and the irresponsible parent.

“Damn. I’ll bet Tiger can’t tell if that burning sensation is the loss of his wife, family, and half his fortune, or the unfortunate result of not wearing a condom.”

Could be the steroids or his recreation use of Ambien, Vicodin and other drugs.

What a FU.

She deserves child support and maybe two years of alimony to get herself on her feet.

If the wife is a stay at home mother why just 2 years

She can get a job. The child support will cover all living expenses for the kids.

This is a terrible PR move.

I seriously doubt she is thinking about PR after being humiliated in front of the entire planet.

"Children need both parents and both parents should have equal access to the children going forward."

I'm sure they will be. But, the fact of the matter is once the legal union between parents is severed, someone has to have the last say in matters concerning the children, at least in divorces that aren't amicable.

It would be best for everyone, especially the children, if father/mother can negotiate amiable custody and visitation. If not, then the court must select one of the two parents to have primary physical and legal custody of the children. It's just a matter of legal practicality.
