Even after a shocking sex scandal that tarnished Tiger Woods, it was tough to ignore what he achieved on the golf course.

He won 64 times around the world, including 12 majors, and hoisted a trophy on every continent golf is played. He lost only one time with the lead going into the final round. His 56 PGA Tour victories in one incomparable decade were more than anyone except four of golf's greatest players won in their careers.

Woods was selected Wednesday as the Athlete of the Decade by members of The Associated Press in a vote that was more about 10 years of performance

Perhaps sportsman of the decade but nobody in a sport that requires so little quickness, speed, muscle, stamina, leaping ability, agility, etc should be considered as the world’s best athlete over a ten year period. Golf makes baseball look physically demanding. Its on par with bowling from an athleticism standpoint.

I suppose if you narrowed the pool of candidates down to clean-livin’, god-fearin’ athletes you’d probably come up with Timmy Goodwin, shortstop for the Ernie’s Garage Hurricanes Little League team in Omaha, Nebraska.

With all due respect and noting the general athleticism which Woods brings to golf, golf is more of a game than anything I’d call an athletic sport. Half the people who play it couldn’t run fifty yards without keeling over dead. I mean, there just isn’t that much of a shortage of serious athletes in the land to choose an “athlete of the year” from...

Golf isn’t a running or jumping sport, but it is extremely difficult at the highest level. Look at how few players are able to win consistently and how many golfing “greats” only won a major or two.

I heard on the Sports staion that the Trophy case may have born the brunt of Elin’s swing. Crystal Claret Jugs don’t react well to Irons.

I say a trophy isn’t the only thing Tiger hoisted on every continent golf is played.

“Crystal Claret”, sounds like we have number 14 on Tiger’s hit parade.

Just wanted to make sure you didn't miss an opportunity.

It’s a game, not a sport. A hugely expensive 1 (in more ways than 1), covering tons of acreage, but a game nonetheless.

Like bowling (which I love), it has few physical demands. Yet no pro bowlers are ever put on these “athlete” rankings.

Only billiards/pool has less, and most people don’t think of that as any more than a game.

Nascar is difficult too and probably requires greater physical abilities than golf. Doesn’t make it a sport and doesn’t make its stars as impressive athletes as those in basketball, soccer, football, tennis, hockey, rugby, Aussie Rules Football, cricket, baseball, handball, netball, track, martial arts, rowing, skiing, or volleyball. From a physical standpoint golfing is about as tough as pool with some walking tossed in. It takes tremendous coordination but overall the “athletes” don’t come close to impressing me as much as those in sports that require a much broader physical skill set than extreme handeye coordination. Take tennis. It requires that type of hand-eye coordination plus tremendous stamina, quickness, lateral quickness, and agility so those players impress me a heck of a lot more than an elite golfer, bowler, or pool player.
