I have a Dell flat screen monitor which is probably five years old. Within the last month, I've noticed the screen is slightly blurry. It's not readily obvious unless you sit and look at it. However, it's causing me eye strain and blurry vision which lasts for some time after looking at it. I can't look at the screen for more than a couple of minutes without eye strain. I never had this before.
I'm prepared for the fact that I may need to buy a new monitor but I'd like to rule everything else out first. Changing the refresh rate, the screen edge type and the brightness and contrast did not help.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Need more info to help you out. Analog or digital monitor? do you have a extra monitor you can plug into your PC? If so, swap the monitors to check to see if it’s the video card and not the monitor that is the problem.
check the physical wiring and connections. Also check to see if you have moved your speakers or any other interference causing device closer to the monitor.
someone may have adjusted your clock & phase setting on your analogue monitor
that’s the main difference between a digital & analogue monitor.

First off, Five years is old for an LCD its due to turn dimmer and more yellow, or blurry too.
You can adjust the refresh rate in the control panel-display icon, try 60 if its on 75 or 75 if its on 60.
Also in the on screen display on your monitor and try to find auto contrast, or factory reset. Some brands like HP just bave a button that says “auto” that works miracles.
You might check to see if your graphic driver is up to date.
Check your resolution.
Question: Has it been always blurry? If so, it may be the LCDs are slow in response to the video input. In this case, get a new high resolution fast LCD monitor.
Look up the product number on the back of the monitor on the Dell site. Find out what the screen resolution is (1280x1024, etc...). Press WINDOWS-M to shrink any open window, right click on the desktop, select properties, and change the screen resolution to match.
You can change the size of the font on your browser window to compensate for the smaller text, as odds are that you’re using a resolution that is less than the actual screen, and the screen’s bits are covering more than one dot on the screen, leading to the blurry viewing.

Some monitors have a menu setting for resetting back to factory defaults. I’ve used that in the past for blurry screen.

It's been a great monitor with no blurriness until the last couple of weeks. How do I check the graphics drivers?
I reset the factory settings, it didn't work.
If so, your problem isn't your monitor ~ it's you.
See your optometrist and he'll probably give you a referral to an opthamologists.
It's possible you have macular degeneration too.

I assume you have been messing with the brightness, contrast and stuff? You’d do that first thing. I’d be messed up if you need a new monitor.
I would check any increase in your Holiday Cheer Alcohol intake first.

Go to your local Wal-mart vision center and spend $50 to get your eyes tested. (dangerdoc I know you know this).
This happened to me at 45...it was like a light switch...
But why would it have changed? I hadn’t changed the settings but it still went blurry.
Most likely time to get a new monitor IMO
